Der Schock des Fronterlebnisses hat nicht nur in der Literatur (u. a. Remarque, Renn, A. Zweig), sondern auch in der bildenden Kunst seine Spuren hinterlassen. Allerdings nur bei deutschen Künstlern. Vor dem Zeithintergrund und der internationalen Szene stellt der Kunstwissenschaftler Eberle 4 unterschiedlich ausgeprägte und interpretierbare Maler vor. Er zeigt, daß Dix nicht nur den Krieg entlarvte, sondern ihn als Teil des Lebenskreislaufes sah, während Grosz sein "sehr gespaltenes Verhältnis zur Lust, zum Verbrechen, zu gewalttätiger Unmittelbarkeit" verarbeitete. Die anhaltendste Wirkung erzielte Beckmann mit seinem Werk, gerade weil er distanziert zu politischen und moralischen Urteilen stand, Schlemmer hingegen zog aus dem Kriegserlebnis seine Konsequenz, daß die Idee die Materie überwinden müsse.
