Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents new data in the archaeology of the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, exploring the chronology and functionality of the small settlements found around the Quadros and Itapeva Lakes. We discuss these small sites within the context of larger sambaqui, Je and Guarani occupation systems within this vast and rich lagoon setting and links to nearby beaches and dune fields as well as forested hinterland mountainous environments, and confirm that these sites were regularly used for short-term occupation by these groups.
