Während der fünfziger Jahre verschäfte sich der politische Gegensatz zwischen den Blöcken zur dramatischen Szenerie eines "Kalten Krieges". Besonders an der Nahtstelle – im geteilten Deutschland – blieben davon die musikalischen Entwicklungen nicht unberührt. Zwischen den "westlichen" und "östlichen" Vorstellungen von einer wahrhaft Neuen Musik schien keine Versöhnung möglich, weil sie (anders als bei den ewigen Kontroversen zwischen konservativen und progressiven Richtungen) nicht zuletzt durch fundamentale ideologische Vorurteile belastet waren. Die westliche "Avantgarde" und der "Sozialistische Realismus" im Osten koexistierten anfangs in erbitterter Frontstellung, ehe beide Dogmen des Fortschritts sich auf je eigene Weise relativierten und schließlich auflösten. Dieser Grundkonflikt bildet den substantiellen Hintergrund und das zentrale Leitmotiv der vorliegenden Dokumentation, die das damalige Musikdenken auf beiden Seiten einzufangen versucht. Die beiden Herausgeber – jeweils profunde Kenner der Neuen Musik im ehemals westlichen und östlichen Deutschland – haben die Quellentexte in thematische Kapitel gegliedert und ihre "zweiseitige" Auswahl chronologisch geordnet. Zu jedem Kapitel gibt es zusammenfassende Kommentare aus der heutigen Sicht der Herausgeber auf die Szene, aus der sie stammen. Mit einer abschließenden Diskussion wollen sie darüberhinaus die Entwicklungswidersprüche jener Zeit benennen und im musikhistorischen Kontext sehen.
