Was 1885 als bescheidene Sammlung von zehn Gemälden begann, wandelte sich innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte zu einer wichtigen Galerie im Osten Deutschlands – das Kunstmuseum des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt in der Moritzburg zu Halle hat eine ereignisreiche Geschichte hinter sich. Als besonders zentral für diese Entwicklung erachtet das Museum den Ankauf von Emil Noldes Bild Abendmahl im Jahr 1913. Den Sprung in die Moderne wollte es damals wagen, und obendrein gelang dem Museum mit dem Kauf ein echter PR-Coup: Wochenlang diskutierte der kunstinteressierte Teil der deutschen Öffentlichkeit darüber, ob zeitgenössische Kunst wie die des Expressionisten Nolde ins Museum gehört. Zum einhundertjährigen Jubiläum des Kaufs von Abendmahl zeigt das Museum in der Moritzburg die Ausstellung Emil Nolde. Farben, heiß und heilig. Die Ausstellung konzentriert sich insbesondere auf die Schaffensphase des deutsch-dänischen Malers zwischen 1908 und 1918. Leuchtende Gartenbilder treffen auf religiöse Darstellungen und exotische Stillleben aus der Südsee, wo sich Nolde von 1913 bis 1914 als Teil einer medizinischen Expedition des Deutschen Kaiserreichs aufhielt. Von den insgesamt 75 ausgestellten Bildern, allesamt Leihgaben, gehörten fünf einst zur Sammlung des Museums in der Moritzburg – doch nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten wurde Noldes Kunst als „entartet“ diffamiert und überwiegend ins Ausland verkauft (Kunstkalender auf www.goethe.de).
