Island 1698. Die Menschen im hohen Norden Islands kämpfen ums Überleben, als im Winter das Packeis auf die Küste zutreibt und das Fischen unmöglich macht. Daran können nur böse Geister und Dämonen schuld sein. Auf einer Eisscholle erblickt B?as, der elfjährige Sohn des Pfarrers, ein kleines unbekanntes Wesen. Er meint, einen bösen Geist gesehen zu haben. Dann aber warnt dieses merkwürdige Wesen die Bewohner des Dorfes vor einer Schneelawine und rettet Boas. Dabei stellt sich heraus, dass es sich um einen etwa gleichaltrigen Inuit-Jungen handelt. Trotz Sprachprobleme - Boas versteht, dass er sich Ikingut nennt, ein Irrtum, wie sich später herausstellt - nimmt er ihn mit nach Hause zu seiner Familie. Doch den Dorfbewohnern ist der fremde Junge unheimlich und sie sperren ihn ein. Listenreich befreien B?as und seine Schwester Asa ihn und Boas flieht mit Ikingut aufs Eis. Als im Dorf niemand die beiden Jungen finden kann, entsteht neben der Sorge um die Leben der beiden Jungen auch so etwas wie schlechtes Gewissen. In letzter Minute werden die beiden Jungen gerettet und zurückgebracht. Doch heißt es nun Abschied nehmen, denn "Ikingut" kann zurück zu seinen Eltern. - Für die Kinderkulturarbeit ist Ikingut hervorragend geeignet. Der Film gibt nicht nur einen Einblick in die Kultur Islands, über die man sonst nur sehr wenig erfährt, sondern hat auch eine Botschaft: Fremd ist jemand einem nur, wenn man ihn nicht kennen lernen will. Es sind im Film die Kinder, die das am ehesten durchschauen. Denn sie sind noch neugierig und werden nicht von Vorurteilen und abergläubischem Verhalten geleitet. Gerade in der gegenwärtigen Weltsituation kann Ikingut ein Vorbild sein, für das Miteinander in einer Welt, in der sich Kulturen vermischen und wir lernen müssen, das 'Fremde' selbst entdecken zu wollen und nicht den Vorurteilen anderer zu glauben.
