Umfang: xiii, 288 Seiten , Illustrationen, Karten
    Ausgabe: First edition
    ISBN: 9781477320679 , 9781477321287
Inhalt: "This collection of original essays brings together a dozen pieces on the history of policing practices along both the southern and northern US borders. The two volume editors themselves have done work that represents the cutting edge of scholarship on the respective borders: Diaz in Border Contraband, and Karibo in Sin City North, her study of the Detroit-Windsor border region. The thematic reach of the book matches the geographic and chronological reach; as the editors put it, the project "explores how particular legal codes and regulatory practices have attempted to define and delineate the parameters of the state; how citizenship is defined in both law and in practice, and how state regulatory apparatuses monitor and police flows of goods and people across international divides." The project begins in the nineteenth century, with an examination of the policing of waterways during the War of 1812. Each subsequent chapter traces how contested jurisdictions and competing interests shaped the practice of border policing through the early 21st century. The collection considers critical historical moments and developments-including the Porfiriato and Mexican Revolution; the struggles over Indian sovereignty; the creation of immigration laws; Prohibition; the rise of transnational drug trafficking; and perception of borders in popular culture. In doing so, the volume examines the powerful ways that federal authorities impose political agendas on borderlands, and how local border residents and regions interact with--and at times push back against--such agendas. By blending political, legal, social, and cultural history, this collection provides new insight into the distinct realities that shaped the borders dividing the US, Canada, and Mexico"--

Inhalt: "The contributors provide fresh insight into the context surrounding the composition and reception of the Psalms, the relationships between the Psalms, and of early audiences who engaged with the material. Close attention is also paid to specific interpretative problems which emerge in the Psalms, both linguistic and theological. Consequently, there is the creation of a more sophisticated historical reconstruction of how the Psalms were used originally and in subsequent periods, opening up challenges and possibilities for scholars through emphasizing the need in critical Psalms scholarship for vitality and imagination."--

Inhalt: This volume assembles leading Near Eastern art historians, archaeologists, and philologists to examine and apply critical contemporary approaches to the arts and artifacts of the ancient Near East. The contributions in the volume, which include a comprehensive first chapter by the editor and twelve paired chapters (each of which explores a key theme of the volume through a specific case study), are divided into six sections: Representation, Context, Complexity, Materiality, Space, and Time | Afterlives. A number of sub-themes and questions also thread through the volume as a whole: how might art historical, archaeological, anthropological, and philological approaches to the Near East complement and inform each other? How do word and image relate? And how might the field of Near Eastern studies not only adapt and apply approaches developed in other fields but also contribute to critical contemporary discourses? The volume is unified both by the themes that thread through it and by the comprehensive first chapter in the volume, which explores the status of Near Eastern arts and artifacts as simultaneously non-Western and ancient and as neither of these, and which provides a larger theoretical framework for issues addressed in the volume as a whole

Inhalt: "The celebrated author of Anne of Green Gables and Emily of New Moon receives much-deserved additional consideration in L.M. Montgomery and Gender. Nineteen contributors take a variety of critical and theoretical positions, from historical analyses of the White Feather campaign and discussions of adoption to medical discourses of death and disease, explorations of Montgomery’s use of humour, and the author’s rewriting of masculinist traditions. The essays span Montgomery’s writing, exploring her famous Anne and Emily books as well as her short fiction, her comic journal composed with her friend Nora Lefurgey, and less-studied novels such as Magic for Marigold and The Blue Castle. Dividing the chapters into five sections – on masculinities and femininities, domestic space, humour, intertexts, and being in time – L.M. Montgomery and Gender addresses the degree to which Montgomery’s work engages and exposes, reflects and challenges the gender roles around her, underscoring how her writing has shaped future representations of gender. Of interest to historians, feminists, gender scholars, scholars of literature, and Montgomery enthusiasts, this wide-ranging collection builds on the depth of current scholarship in its approach to the complexity of gender in the works of one of Canada’s best-loved authors."
