    Series Statement: Technicities : TECH
Content: Demonstrates Blanchot's ongoing importance for contemporary philosophical debate about technology, the post-human, and ecological thinkingDemonstrates a considerable shift in Blanchot's thinking from 1940s to 1980sHighlights the significance of Blanchot for important figures of twentieth-century French thought such as Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Bernard StieglerArgues for the continued relevance of Blanchot to twenty first-century debates in literary theory and criticismHolly Langstaff reappraises the influential French thinker Maurice Blanchot's writing from the 1940s to his late work in the 1980s, demonstrating how Blanchot's exploration of the question of technology remains decisive throughout his career. She situates Blanchot's fictional and critical work in the context of his thinking of art as techne - as it develops out of Martin Heidegger's philosophy. While Blanchot follows Heidegger in the view that writing is a form of techne, he never appeals for salvation from the menace of technology in the modern era. Rather, he sees in all forms of technology the opportunity for a new way of thinking beyond value. This, Blanchot calls an entirely different sort of affirmation.

Content: "This collection of original essays brings together a dozen pieces on the history of policing practices along both the southern and northern US borders. The two volume editors themselves have done work that represents the cutting edge of scholarship on the respective borders: Diaz in Border Contraband, and Karibo in Sin City North, her study of the Detroit-Windsor border region. The thematic reach of the book matches the geographic and chronological reach; as the editors put it, the project "explores how particular legal codes and regulatory practices have attempted to define and delineate the parameters of the state; how citizenship is defined in both law and in practice, and how state regulatory apparatuses monitor and police flows of goods and people across international divides." The project begins in the nineteenth century, with an examination of the policing of waterways during the War of 1812. Each subsequent chapter traces how contested jurisdictions and competing interests shaped the practice of border policing through the early 21st century. The collection considers critical historical moments and developments-including the Porfiriato and Mexican Revolution; the struggles over Indian sovereignty; the creation of immigration laws; Prohibition; the rise of transnational drug trafficking; and perception of borders in popular culture. In doing so, the volume examines the powerful ways that federal authorities impose political agendas on borderlands, and how local border residents and regions interact with--and at times push back against--such agendas. By blending political, legal, social, and cultural history, this collection provides new insight into the distinct realities that shaped the borders dividing the US, Canada, and Mexico"--

Content: When a group of liberal arts students embark on a university assignment about the natural environment, no one could have quite prepared them for the bewildering array of questions and provocations to confront them in their task. What starts out as an earnest attempt to understand nature in the modern world, turns into a philosophical and practical tangle that only a good transdisciplinary education can provide. Can anyone save the day and actually start to value ‘nature’? And if they can’t, then what’s stopping them? The idea of ‘valuing nature’ harmonises diverse areas of natural resource management and is an important dimension of scientific and practical work concerned with managing ecosystems and habitats for sustainability. This graphic book takes the reader on an exploration of the issues that arise from this growing interest and concern in the valuation of nature. Set around the premise of a ‘motley’ group of undergraduates endeavouring to complete a university assignment on ‘nature in the modern world’, the book explores: the many and diverse meanings people assign to nature the different ways the relationship between people and nature might be characterised the many values systems people hold for the natural world the options and approaches society can deploy to manage it the extent to which we need entirely new economic systems to protect and sustain nature. This highly interdisciplinary book invites consideration of a range of philosophical and applied debates and questions. Written in an accessible style, it is an ideal undergraduate text in the fields of ecology, human and physical geography, conservation science, environment, social science and spatial planning, as well as a general primer for graduate natural and social scientists embarking on interdisciplinary research in the natural resource management arena.

Content: "Chryssa & New York offers a timely reassessment of Greek-born artist Chryssa (Chryssa Vardea-Mavromichali, 1933–2013). Chryssa was a leading figure in the postwar New York art world and in the use of signage, text, and neon, yet her work, which bridges Pop, Conceptual, and Minimalist approaches to art making, remains under-recognized. Focusing on the artist’s early career, in particular her time in New York from the 1950s to the 1970s, this book charts the emergence of her singular aesthetic, especially her formal innovations with neon, and culminates in the development of her monumental and rarely seen installation The Gates to Times Square (1964–66). Essays situate Chryssa’s art alongside that of other New York-based practitioners in the 1950s and 1960s, consider her work through the lenses of queer theory and the Greek diaspora, and uncover her crucial influence on light art today. Rounding out the volume, a conversation on the technical aspects of her practice and a comprehensive chronology make this the definitive publication on Chryssa for years to come."--Distributor's website
Content: "The first major publication about Chryssa in more than thirty years, this volume reintroduces the Greek-born artist to a new generation of scholars and art lovers alike. Focusing on her early career, in particular her time in New York in the late 1950s, the book charts the emergence of her singular aesthetic, especially her formal innovations with neon, and culminates in the development of her monumental and rarely seen installation The Gates to Times Square (1966). Curator Michelle White sets the stage in a formal reading of Chryssa's art, contextualizing it through the work of other New York-based practitioners in the 1950s and '60s, with particular attention to the influence of the group of artists living and working in New York's Coenties Slip neighborhood during that era. Jonathan D. Katz, associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, considers Chryssa's work with-and strategic destruction of-letters, analyzing her practice through the lenses of Structuralism and queer theory. Independent scholar Kalliopi Minioudaki contextualizes the artist's work within that of the Greek diaspora and its centuries-long visual languages and traditions. Albright-Knox assistant curator Tina Rivers Ryan uses The Gates and other light works by Chryssa as case studies to uncover her crucial influence on the legacy of light art today. Artist Tiona Nekkia McClodden and author Lisa Cohen, respectively, respond experimentally to the problems of biography and the archive and think through Chryssa's queerness in relation to her work. A conversation between Matt Dilling, fabricator at Lite Brite Neon, and Joy Bloser, Menil conservator, sheds light on the technical aspects of the artist's practice. A comprehensive chronology by curator Megan Holly Witko makes this the definitive publication on Chryssa for years to come"--

Content: This is the ninth volume in a continuing series of publications listing and identifying all illustrations contained in English manuscripts from the time of Chaucer to Henry VIII. Because representations of all types are included?from miniatures to marginalia? the series provides unparalleled reference to imagery in the long fifteenth century. The present fascicle, the second of two devoted to the collections in Cambridge, catalogues 553 manuscripts for eleven colleges and can be used as a search tool for manuscripts available on line. The manuscript entries in the catalogue note the subject of every illustration, all of which are fully indexed in the index of pictorial subjects. Entries for alchemy and medicine are particularly rich in this fascicle; the largest entry is for costume. The broad range of pictorial information makes the Cambridge fascicles useful supplements to the fifth volume of 'A Catalogue of Western Illumination in the Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge Colleges'. Like the other fascicles in the series, 'Cambridge II' includes a manual for users, an extensive glossary of subjects and terms, indexes of authors, texts and incipits, as well as a list of manuscripts with coats of arms. There are forty-two black and white illustrations
