Abstract: Music and reading domains require similar auditory processing skills. Students employ these skills when learning a new song through an oral/aural or rote-teaching approach. In this article, I review literature on the effectiveness of immersion and phrase-by-phrase approaches for teaching a song with or without words. Then, using an amusing analogy, I suggest a process for using the English language arts to teach a song using a rote approach. Two lessons are described that include prompts to aid teachers in analyzing songs to teach music through language.

Abstract: In this article, the author shares favorite children’s books and stories for integrating language and music during shared-book experiences. The music activities described are aimed to contribute to the overall singing development for children in preschool and primary grades. Music and reading teachers will enjoy sharing these books with early readers in ways that foster expressive speaking and singing through vocal exploration and singing repeated melodic patterns.

Abstract: In this article, I review two books that address the power of music for the individual and group. Both books address the benefits of making, learning, and listening to music during times of conflict. The first brief review is David McPhail’s picture book Mole Music. The second is Children of the Stone: The Power of Music in a Hard Land, Sandy Tolan’s nonfiction account of how music functions in the lives of those who live in the Middle East. The fictional picture book highlights the ideal of music directly prompting peace, while Tolan’s story of Ramzi Aburedwan’s transformation from a Palestinian boy throwing stones at Israeli soldiers to musician and activist demonstrates the complexity of a concerted and purposeful effort to promote peace through music. Each book provides an opportunity to engage students at the secondary level in discussions of how music functions in their lives and others.

Abstract: Little Excavator, a recent publication by Anna Dewdney, is a delightful picture book for young children and perfect for a musical shared book experience in a group setting for preschool and first-grade children. In this article, connections between music learning and the typical shared book experience are outlined. Musical ways to share the book and extension activities for pitch and rhythm concepts are provided. The author includes alignments to National Core Music Standards as well as English Language Common Core Standards for music and reading teachers.

Abstract: Based on the ideas of social-anthropologist Ernest Becker, Terror Management Theory (TMT) explains human behavior as being motivated by conscious and unconscious mortality salience. This article examines the role of music in the denial of death and catalogues related literature in the music and social psychology fields. Categories include: TMT and art, music used as control condition in TMT research, and songs and TMT. A brief description of Becker’s theory and TMT and a discussion of the functions of music in culture precede the literature review. Analysis of the literature suggests that (a) music provides a safe window frame through which to examine death, (b) music created for community purposes may buffer death anxiety more readily than that created for individual purposes, and (c) songs prompt mortality salience and simultaneously buffer death anxiety depending on individual music preferences, cultural worldviews, and perceptions of famous others. The review further identifies limitations in TMT studies regarding music and terror management and highlights the need for additional empirical research to untangle the complexity of music’s role in mitigating death anxiety growing out of mortality salience.

Abstract: Word sorts are standard practice for aiding children in acquiring skills in English language arts. When included in the general music classroom, word sorts may aid students in acquiring a working knowledge of music vocabulary. The author shares a word sort activity drawn from vocabulary in John Lithgow’s children’s book Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo!

Abstract: In this article, the author reviews Flora and the Flamingo by Molly Idle, a unique wordless picture book of friendship, movement, and music. Included is a brief discussion of Johann Strauss II and The Blue Danube Waltz, Idle’s musical inspiration for the book. Abstract: The author reviews Mahin and Turk’s children’s book Muddy: The Story of Blues Legend Muddy Waters. This biography of McKinley Morganfield describes his challenges and successes in music and life. Illustrations reflect African American culture using color palettes to highlight the places Waters lived and the music connected to those places including the Mississippi Delta blues and the electric Chicago blues style. The musical writing of Mahin expresses Muddy’s story in a lyrical fashion, borrowing elements from the jazz idiom. The author includes a selected discography and suggestions for additional instruction in the music of Muddy’s life using the artistic processes of listening, responding, and performing appropriate for upper elementary and middle school students in general music.
