Inhalt: Wholly obsolete or always a possibility? past and present trajectories of a 'dematerialization' of art / Christian Berger -- Language is a change in material : on Lawrence Weiner's Ellipses / Sabeth Buchmann -- Materializing conceptual affects : the love discourse of Zofia Kulik's Letter from Milan (1972) / Luiza Nader.
Inhalt: "Conceptualism and Materiality. Matters of Art and Politics underscores the significance of materials and materiality within Conceptual art and conceptualism more broadly. It challenges the notion of conceptualism as an idea-centered, anti-materialist enterprise, and highlights the political implications thereof. The essays focus on the importance of material considerations for artists working during the 1960s and 1970s in different parts of the world. In reconsidering conceptualism's neglected material aspects, the authors reveal the rich range of artistic inquiries into theoretical and political notions of matter and material. Their studies revise and diversify the account of this important chapter in the history of twentieth-century art - a reassessment that carries wider implications for the study of art and materiality in general"--

Originaltitel: Concertos piano, orchestra no. 1, op. 11 E minor
Inhalt: One of the most groundbreaking recordings of 2017 was Daniil Trifonov's interpretation of Chopin's Piano Concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra led by Mikhail Pletnev. Get a glimpse into the recording and performance process with Christian Berger's recent documentary. The collaboration of conductor-pianist-composer Mikhail Pletnev with young virtuoso Daniil Trifonov makes for an unusual pairing: both pianists and composers, both Russians, yet with incredibly different life experiences and personalities ... Trifonov is one of a group of brilliant young pianists who have won big prizes on the international competition circuit and gone on to lead a high profile touring concert career. Pletnev, who passed by the same stage, went on to develop an international career as a conductor and composer. With their most recent project, Pletnev has reorchestrated Chopin's concertos (beloved but recognized as occasionnaly lacking in sophistication in their handling of the orchestra), and he leads the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Trifonov as soloist in their performances and a series of recordings. Learn about the incredible process and go behind the scenes in recording sessions and live concerts

Inhalt: Teodor Currentzis--"enfant terrible" of the classical conducting world--comes together with one of today's best orchestras to record Don Giovanni. Follow the Greek maestro from rehearsals at the opera house in Perm (where he has been music director since 2011) to European tours to lengthy recording sessions, and get an up-close-and-personal glimpse at both the artist and the man. For many, the Russian city of Perm might seem like the end of the world, isolated in the foothills of the Ural mountains. But it is in this rapidly developing industrial city--which is establishing itself as one of Russia's modern cultural centers--that the Greek conductor Teodor Currentzis has been quietly revolutionizing classical music with his ensemble MusicAeterna. The film follows the recording sessions of Mozart's Don Giovanni, documenting the artists' habits and painting a portrait of this exuberant conductor. Experience the world of classical music in 3-D, with its complex politics, fascinating personalities, and timeless creations

Originaltitel: Concertos piano, orchestra K. 453 G major
Inhalt: In the Spring of 2014, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, acclaimed and world-famous early music innovator and authority, and Lang Lang, a superstar pianist of stunning virtuosity and freeƯwheeling musical instincts, took over the Wiener Musikverein for an unprecedented musical meeting-of-the-minds between two very different artists. Together with the Wiener Philharmonik Orchester, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Lang Lang record the Mozart's Piano Concertos No. 17 in G major K. 453 and No. 24 in C minor K. 491. This film documents those recording sessions, offering revealing insight into the creative processes of two of today's most distinctive and influential musicians. Both artists found the collaboration to be rewarding. For Lang Lang, "every session with [Harnoncourt] is like a masterclass. He just gave me everything from his heart, and that direct connection in music-making is the most important inspiration for me". Nikolaus Harnoncourt reflected that, "It's rare to find someone who is so open-minded ... I can only work with soloists who are ready to develop a concept together with me, and very seldom have I experienced a reading of the work that developed so quickly."

Inhalt: "I just want to make music with people who want to make music as much as I do; who cannot find anything more important than the moment that they are in, when they are making music."--Alondra de la Parra Mexican American maestra Alondra de la Parra has spent her entire life breaking down barriers. Appointed in 2017 as the first-ever music director and female conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (Brisbane, Australia), the journey that led her to that point charts the rise of an incredible musician of indefatigable determination, remarkable creativity, and out-of-the-box thinking on the relationship between identity, culture, and classical music. As she puts it, "I am a woman, I am a Mexican, but that is just part of the many ingredients that make me who I am. We bring to the podium everything that one is. One can only be who one is and nothing else, it's the experiences of your life that you share with others." Join the maestra on her journey in this captivating documentary film by Christian Berger! Inhalt: "The Highest Level" explores the Berlin recording session with Lang Lang and the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. The documentary gives audiences a glimpse at processes usually kept under wraps--the artists' personal preparation, the rehearsal and recording sessions in the Berliner Philharmonie, the work of the mixing and balancing units during audio post-production--documenting what happens when musical stars align and bring a once-in-a-lifetime recording into being. The visual and emotional closeness to the artists makes the film a particularly intimate experience: to Lang Lang and Sir Simon Rattle, to the musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and to the audio engineers and technical crew. It is their committed collaboration that made their recording of Bartók's Piano Concert No. 2 and Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concerto possible. Picture: Lang Lang © Harald Hoffmann

    Originaltitel: Symphonies
Inhalt: Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen present their vision of Schumann's four symphonies. In addition to the live recording of the concerts, the production also features a documentary which portrays the origin and development of the project. "We want to show ourselves as we make music", says Järvi, reflecting the ensemble's pedagogical mission to make classical music accessible to the young. Watch this documentary on medici.tv. Schumann as he has never been heard before! This and nothing else was the goal of Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen in the realization of their Schumann project; and according to the press and the audience there's no doubt that they've achieved their aim. After their internationally celebrated Beethoven cycle, this truly unique orchestra and its extraordinary principal conductor have now elaborated their vision of the artistic wealth of the Schumann symphonies. As the press wrote, "the symphonies seem to be newly born out of the spirit of dance, out of motion itself. Järvi's Schumann is above all played with tremendous excitement and enthusiasm" In a word: "The Bremen dream team under Järvi has just landed another major coup. As for Schumann, there is no way around the Kammerphilharmonie". As was to be expected of Paavo Järvi and the Kammerphilharmonie, this production features not only a simple concert recording. An extensive documentary provides insights into the origin and development of the project: "Schumann at Pier2" contains excerpts from rehearsals, comments on the works and their interpretation by Paavo Järvi, biographical information on Schumann, scenes featuring orchestral musicians (section leaders) demonstrating important passages and providing explanations on various facets of performance and interpretation. "We want to show ourselves as we make music", says Järvi. The concert recording also unfolded in an unconventional manner: in harmony with the ensemble's pedagogical mission to make classical music accessible to the young -- the orchestra rehearses in a school in an underprivileged Bremen neighborhood and was awarded a national prize for their work with youths -, the production took place at "Pier 2", a former storage building in the port of Bremen that is now used as a club and theater. The orchestra performed before a young audience on a specially designed stage, which also reflects the workshop character of the project
