Inhalt: The reference of the postmodern task of thinking is Auschwitz, the abyss and discontinuity separating us from the world of our ancestors. As inhabitants of Planet Auschwitz our point of reference lacks all transcendental warrants; it is not a non-referable reference which constitutes the abyss we must enter, endure, and in which our intellectual and cultural tradition must be transformed. The private/public transformations which constitute the texts of this book attempt to depart from the dystopic individuality and public life resulting from business-as-usual after Auschwitz. The three parts of the book are progressive reworkings of traditional metaphysics as adapted and modified by a modernism that refuses to grapple with its complicity. It is precisely that complicity which postmodern thinking takes up in its attempt to signify otherwise than the easy modernist translations and images of tradition. Thus it is a series of uneasy images imaging otherwise but never apart from modernity that take us away from complicity toward a transformed tradition. The uneasy images of this book are photogrammic combinations of photographs and texts, mutual supplements, pulling tradition through the Event against the persistent and murderous forces of contemporary idolatry and repression.

Inhalt: The Myōtei Dialogues is the first complete English translation one of the most important works of early Japanese Christianity. Fukansai Habian's Myōtei mondō (1605) presents a sharp critique of the three main Japanese traditions, Buddhism, Shintō, and Confucianism, followed by an explanation of the main tenets of Christianity specifically aimed at a Japanese audience. Written by a convert, it is of importance not merely because it shows us how the Christian message was presented by a Japanese to other Japanese, but also for what it reveals about the state of the three native traditions at the beginning of the seventeenth century.

Inhalt: Der Briefwechsel des Prinzen Heinrich VII. Reuß, einer der Starbotschafter der Bismarckzeit und der beginnenden wilhelminischen Epoche, bietet einen intimen Einblick in die deutsche Außenpolitik nach der Reichsgründung 1871 bis 1894. Der kanadische Historiker James Stone hat in den 1980er Jahren den Nachlass des Prinzen Heinrich VII. Reuß in Stonsdorf/Hirschberg (Schlesien) entdeckt. Reuß war einer der deutschen Starbotschafter der Bismarckzeit und der beginnenden wilhelminischen Epoche. Der Nachlass war zwar 1945 von der Roten Armee dezimiert worden, über drei Viertel sind aber von den polnischen Behörden gerettet und neu geordnet worden. In weiteren deutschen Archiven haben sich zusätzliche Privatbriefe des Prinzen Reuß an die höheren Beamten des Auswärtigen Amtes und an Botschafterkollegen (und umgekehrt) gefunden. Sie werden nun von Winfried Baumgart, in einer wissenschaftlichen Edition aufgearbeitet, vorgelegt. Sie geben einen intimen Einblick in die deutsche Außenpolitik von 1871 bis 1894 aus der Warte des Prinzen, der in dieser Zeit das Deutsche Reich in Petersburg, Konstantinopel und Wien vertrat.

Inhalt: Volume 8 in the series, appearing in two parts, A and B, deals with the systematics of cyst nematodes of the subfamily Heteroderinae. Cyst nematodes are important pathogens causing extensive damage and significant yield loss to many crops in both temperate and tropical regions. Part A presents summarised information on various aspects of morphology, biology, ecology, pathology, biogeography, control measures and diagnostics of these nematodes. Molecular diagnostic tables and comprehensive tabular and dichotomous keys for species identification, together with descriptions of protocols for extraction, light and electron microscopy studies, and molecular diagnostics are also included. The taxonomic section of part A provides diagnoses for six genera, viz ., Globodera , Punctodera , Cactodera , Dolichodera , Betulodera and Paradolichodera , and includes descriptions and morphometrics of 30 valid species. The work is illustrated by 101 drawings and photographs The genus Heterodera is mainly covered in part B, complete descriptions and morphometrics of the 80 known valid species being provided and the species illustrated by 159 line drawings and photographs Identification of the species using morphological and molecular techniques is also covered.
