Series Statement: Cambridge studies in medieval life and thought 4th ser., 35
Content: This book provides perspectives on the ways in which scholastic natural philosophy anticipated and contributed to the emergence of scientific thought. Historians of medieval science have hesitated to step outside the sphere of intellectual culture in their search for factors influencing proto-scientific thought. This book searches for influences both within and beyond university culture, and argues that the transformation of the conceptual model of the natural world c.1260–1380 was strongly influenced by the contemporary rapid monetisation of European society. It analyses the impact of the monetised market place on the most characteristic concern of natural philosophy of the period: its preoccupation with measurement, gradation, and the quantification of qualities

Series Statement: The Century psychology series
Content: This volume is the product of an experiment in education. A concise and informative prospectus was submitted in the fall of 1949 by the Social Science Research Council to the Carnegie Corporation of New York and provided funds for a seminar to be conducted under the general sponsorship of the council. In the prospectus it was proposed that a group of psychologists meet with the purpose of discussing the status and current problems of learning theory. The informal papers they presented at their meetings are presented again here. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)

Content: Although the behaviour and ecology of primates have been more thoroughly studied than that of any other group of mammals, there have been very few attempts to compare the communities of living primates found in different parts of the world. In Primate Communities, an international group of experts compares the composition, behaviour and ecology of primate communities in Africa, Asia, Madagascar and South America. They examine the factors underlying the similarities and differences between these communities, including their phylogenetic history, climate, rainfall, soil type, forest composition, competition with other vertebrates and human activities. As it brings together information about primate communities from around the world for the very first time, it will quickly become an important source book for researchers in anthropology, ecology and conservation, and a readable and informative text for undergraduate and graduate students studying primate ecology, primate conservation or primate behaviour

Series Statement: International Law - Book Archive pre-2000 12
Content: This is the twelfth book in the series International Straits of the World which describes the geography of a narrow waterway linking two seas and its relevance to shipping, economic development, and social welfare in the region, especially examining the legal status of the strait and its international relations. As a central focus, this study addresses the legal status of the Strait in the light of the 1982 U.N. Law of the Sea Convention. The Convention not only prescribes limits to the territorial sea, an exclusive economic zone and a continental shelf for coastal states, but also addresses rules for the transit of straits for international navigation. The book details the unusual demarcation of Australian territorial seas in certain islands and the unique fisheries - deep seabed lines of jurisdiction. Finally, this study turns sympathetically to the welfare of the Islanders, a small distinct ethnic group which has suffered losses in land, culture, and independence through the rush of western civilization. The author illuminates the importance of the Protected Zone established by the Torres Strait Treaty to Islander economic and environmental concerns. He also examines and takes a position on the feasibility of an independent state for the Islanders
