More difficult to define than war, peace has recently become the object of historians' attention. Precious, never definitively acquired, the hope of the people -- it has taken many faces through a thousand years of French history. Peace made impossible by unequal treaties that humiliated the vanquished, such as the Treaty of Troyes of 1420 that overwhelmed France after the defeat of Azincourt, at the heart of the Hundred Years War. The fragile peace of kings which, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, were only aimed at restoring the mechanical equilibrium, and were always contested between European powers. An illusory peace that was established on either side of the Iron Curtain after the Second World War, based on the reciprocal threat of mass destruction by the atomic weapon. It is a very strange peace that we live in today: in a pacified European Union but also in a war against terrorism. Written by eminent international relations specialists, this book provides food for thought: peace results from a permanent state of construction, the principles of which have emerged over the past centuries and to which France has taken part through its foreign policy
