Inhalt: The introduction of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has changed higher education enormously in many European countries. This development is increasingly encapsulated under the term Englishization, that is, the increasing dispersion of English as a means of communication in non-Anglophone contexts. Englishization is not undisputed. Nor is it uniform. In this volume, authors from 15 European countries present analyses from a range of perspectives coalescing around four core concerns: the quality of education, cultural identity, inequality of opportunities and questions of justice and democracy.

    Serie: Biovalley monographs Vol. 1
Inhalt: The last decades have seen the rise of neuroscience to one of the most dynamic biomedical disciplines. With the development of powerful new techniques it has been possible to investigate specific physiological and pathological neural mechanisms and thus to elucidate the etiology of many neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. This first volume of the new book series ‘BioValley Monographs’ presents a whole range of methods developed to grow different kinds of neurons and glial cells in vitro. It is the result of a trinational cooperation between scientists of Neurex, the neuroscience network of the Upper Rhine valley. The articles are not just simple descriptions of bench techniques but discuss the unique features of each method, its difficulties, and tricks to avoid these pitfalls. The book covers cells growing in a dissociated state, organotypic slices which retain the architecture of neuronal networks in vivo, as well as cultures on architectured substrates allowing researchers to apply geometrical constraints in order to study the role and importance of synaptic connections more efficiently.Presenting expert guidelines to prepare, establish and maintain neural cell and tissue cultures, this book will be a valuable tool for all scientists and technicians interested in basic and applied research in neurobiology, neurology and neuropharmacology. No scientific library should be without it!

Inhalt: This publication describes in detail some animal models of outstanding importance for the study of human neurological diseases. An introductory article provides a definition of animal models, looks at the history and ethics of their use, and highlights the reasons why animal models are so useful in scientific research. The following chapters present some of the newer models which play a key role in the study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, stroke and peripheral neuropathy. Their specific features are detailed in the method section of each paper, and their application to the study of human neurological diseases is discussed in a comprehensive manner, i.e. limits and challenges posed by these models are evaluated and potential improvements suggested.A valuable single source of information, this book is recommended reading for neuroscientists as well as for neurologists and neurosurgeons interested in preclinical research on human neurological diseases

Serie: Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 232
Inhalt: This volume contains the elaborated and harmonized versions of seven lectures given at the first Advanced Course in Artificial Intelligence, held in Vignieu, France, in July 1985. Most of them were written in tutorial form; the book thus provides an extremely valuable guide to the fundamental aspects of AI. In the first part, Delgrande and Mylopoulos discuss the concept of knowledge and its representation. The second part is devoted to the processing of knowledge. The contribution by Huet shows that both computation and inference or deduction are just different aspects of the same phenomenon. The chapter written by Stickel gives a thorough and knowledgeable introduction to the most important aspects of deduction by some form of resolution. The kind of reasoning that is involved in inductive inference problem solving (or programming) from examples, and in learning, is covered by Biermann. The tutorial by Bibel covers the more important forms of knowledge processing that might play a significant role in common sense reasoning. The third part of the book focuses on logic programming and functional programming. Jorrand presents the language FP2, where term rewriting forms the basis for the semantics of both functional and parallel programming. In the last chapter, Shapiro gives an overview of the current state of concurrent PROLOG.
Anmerkung: Knowledge representation: Features of knowledge -- Deduction and computation -- An introduction to automated deduction -- Fundamental mechanisms in machine learning and inductive inference -- Methods of automated reasoning -- Term rewriting as a basis for the design of a functional and parallel programming language -- Concurrent Prolog: A progress report.
