    Content: his book is about climate and architecture. Written by the Swiss architect Philippe Rahm, it is at the same time a monograph on the architectural, urbanistic and landscape work of the office "Philippe Rahm architectes", a manifesto for a climatic architecture to face global warming, and a theoretical and practical treatise on the art of building atmospheres. Architecture and urbanism were traditionally based on climate and health, as we can read in treatises of Vitruvius, Palladio or Alberti, where exposure to wind and sun, variations in temperature and humidity influenced the forms of cities and buildings. These fundamental causes of urban planning and buildings were ignored in the second half of the 20th century thanks to the enormous use of fossil energy by heating and air conditioning systems, pumps and refrigerators, that today cause the greenhouse effect and global warming. The fight against climate change forces the architects and urban designer to take back seriously the climatic issue in order to base their design on more consideration to the local climatic context and energy resources. Faced with the climatic challenge of the 21st century, we propose to reset our discipline on its intrinsic atmospheric qualities, where air, light, heat or humidity are recognized are real materials of building, convection, thermal conduction, evaporation, emissivity, or effusivity are becoming design tools for composing architecture and cities, and through materialism dialectic, are able to revolutionize esthetic and social values.
    Note: Because the building sector is responsible for 39% of global CO2 emissions, global warming imposes on architecture a climatic purpose, which involves considering energy, thermal and aeraulic issues in the design and choice of architectural forms and materials, in order to initially reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and thus limit greenhouse gas emissions. If this purpose is new, because it appeared at the end of the twentieth century, motivated by the climate emergency, putting an end to the immoderate use of coal, gas and oil, which was done during the twentieth century, the climate issue is actually at the origin of the appearance of architecture, its fundamental cause. The raison d'être of architecture is climatic. The architect must draw climates rather than geometric forms. Architecture is a meteorological formalization. Architecture is the art of building climates.

    Content: While the main challenge in intertropical and boreal regions is tackling deforestation and forest resource degradation, forests and forestry in temperate regions face what may appear to be contradictory goals: to increase atmospheric carbon capture through sequestration in biomass and soils, while providing a growing share of the resources needed to produce essential material goods and energy for human societies as well as gradually renewing forests to enable them to adapt to future climate conditions. Creating a balance between these potentially competing priorities has been the subject of intense societal and scientific debate in recent years, which has prompted us to examine all aspects of these issues in greater depth. INRAE and IGN, at the request of the French Ministries responsible for agriculture and forestry, have jointly undertaken a scientific assessment to shed light on the details of this debate, using the example of forests and the forestry & wood sectors in metropolitan France.     Content: Deux visions du rôle du secteur forestier dans la lutte contre le changement climatique semblent aujourd'hui s'opposer : l'une promeut l'accumulation de biomasse en forêt pour optimiser le stockage de carbone dans les écosystèmes forestiers ; l'autre préconise un accroissement des prélèvements de bois dans une approche large du développement de la bioéconomie. Si la première démarche mise sur le renforcement du « puits » forestier de carbone, la seconde vise à réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre dues aux activités humaines en substituant des produits bois aux biens dont les modes de production sont plus émetteurs. Centré sur l'exemple de la forêt française métropolitaine, cet ouvrage affine tout d'abord le bilan carbone de la filière forêt-bois et identifie les incertitudes liées à certains de ses paramètres clés. Puis, dans une démarche prospective, trois scénarios de gestion forestière, se différenciant par le niveau et les modalités des prélèvements de bois en forêt et par leur mode de gestion des boisements, ont été imaginés et leurs bilans carbone projetés jusqu'à l'horizon 2050. Les impacts sur ces bilans carbone d'une aggravation du changement climatique et de crises majeures, telles que des incendies, des tempêtes ou des invasions biologiques à grande échelle, ont été analysés.
