Abstract:
Le recensement de population de 1982 met en évidence le redressement démographique de l’espace rural français, l’importance de l’exode urbain et la déconcentration du parc de logements vers les campagnes situés à la périphérie des grandes villes. Le développement spectaculaire de la production de maisons individuelles dans les communes périurbaines doit être mis en rapport avec les transformations du système socio-économique français dans les quinze dernières années. Différentes définitions et évaluations de la périurbanisation ont été proposées et sont discutées ici. Les relations entre la production d’espaces périurbains et le mouvement social sont ensuite analysées. D’une part, il convient de nuancer l’image d’une société périurbaine relativement homogène de classes moyennes salariées, de ne pas négliger l’apparition ou le renforcement de processus ségrégatifs dans les communes rurales recevant des migrants urbains. D’autre part, l’analyse des pratiques sociales et des positions prises par ces «néo-ruraux» dans la gestion municipale met en évidence des convergences entre le discours «rurbain» valorisant le village et la famille, et l’idéologie du local. Enfin, l’espace périurbain doit être étudié, du point de vue du logement et de l’emploi, comme un segment du marché urbain : la diversité des configurations des aires périurbaines traduit les spécificités socio-économiques des villes et des trames urbaines régionales.
