Series Statement: Studies in Asian art and culture volume 6
Content: "The relationships of the Jains with colonial administrators, Western scholars, and missionaries between 1800 and 1950 were marked by both competition and cooperation, as they interacted in economic, political, intellectual and religious spheres. This volume traces these encounters, and also examines the contributions to the history of Jain studies made by Jain and non-Jain Indians through their collaborations with Western scholars. The book is divided into three sections. The first considers the engagement on the part of European missionaries and Orientalists, and British colonial officials, with Jains and Jainism from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. The second focuses on the changing dynamics of identities within the Jain community during the nineteenth century, brought about through their mercantile, entrepreneurial, philanthropic and legal activities. The final section maps the trajectory of Jainological studies undertaken by German, Italian, American and Indian scholars from the second half of the nineteenth century into the early twentieth century. Taken together, these chapters make an important interdisciplinary contribution to scholarly understanding of the Jains' situation as a religious minority"--

Content: In Landscapes Between Then and Now, Nicola Brandt examines the increasingly compelling and diverse cross-disciplinary work of photographers and artists made during the transition from apartheid to post-apartheid and into the contemporary era. By examining specific artworks made in South Africa, Namibia and Angola, Brandt sheds light on established and emerging themes related to aftermath landscapes, embodied histories, (un)belonging, spirituality and memorialization. She shows how landscape and identity are mutually constituted, and profiles this process against the background of the legacy of the acutely racially divisive policies of the apartheid regime that are still reflected on the land. As a signpost throughout the book, Brandt draws on the work of the renowned South African photographer Santu Mofokeng and his critical thinking about landscape. Landscapes Between Then and Now explores how practitioners who engage with identity and their physical environment as a social product might reveal something about the complex and fractured nature of postcolonial and contemporary societies. Through diverse strategies and aesthetics, they comment on inherent structures and epistemologies of power whilst also expressing new and radical forms of self-determinism. Brandt asks why these cross-disciplinary works ranging from social documentary to experimental performance and embodied practices are critical now, and what important possibilities for social and political reflection and engagement they suggest.

Series Statement: Biblical interpretation series 206
Content: Academic expertise is essential. But have you ever wondered how it itself is spiritually formative? This book, coming from an interdisciplinary assortment of scholars, shows how the exegetical methods of Theological Interpretation of Scripture (TIS) are themselves spiritually formative. This book provides a diverse collection of essays that focus on theological interpretative methods that result in a unique transformational experience not achieved through historical-critical or grammatical-historical approaches alone. Renowned thinkers—such as biblical scholar Ben Witherington III, historical theologian Mark Elliott, and theologian Arthur Sutherland—offer new works that explore how reading theologically can transform theology, cultures, and individuals. These new studies focus on the theological exegesis of such thinkers as Mother Teresa, Thomas Aquinas, Ignatius of Antioch, and Clement of Alexandria. The collection also includes several important and timely pieces that show how theological interpretation leads to moral formation within diverse cultural groups including African American and Latinx communities
