Series Statement: Advances in Teaching and Teacher Education; 4
Content: In Clinical Partnerships in Urban Elementary School Settings, early career scholars describe their work in a clinical partnership model in one large urban district partnering with teachers, children, families, and administrators making a commitment to not only educate children but also the development of elementary teachers. Topics include community-university relationships, deconstructing privilege and oppression, responsive collaboration, professional identity, and the ways teacher candidates position young children. The chapter authors are early career scholars who have participated in "community-engaged scholarship" at a Research-Extensive institution of higher education. They seek to illuminate the importance of this scholarship in order to grow the academic repertoires of emerging scholars in their ideologically becoming as well as connect and elevate the ways in which community engagement is valued and disseminated in publishing. Readers of this text will: (1) read stories of teacher educators working through the "messy reality" of engaging in clinical teaching work; (2) gain insight to the complexity of the relationships with community, university, and schools and the individuals who seek to establish and/or nurture equitable learning environments for students; and (3) understand the power of qualitative research as a tool for telling stories about this messy work as well as discuss the necessity in valuing such efforts among higher education. Contributors are: Tammy R. Davis, Tim Foster, Lateefah Id-Deen, Ann Larson, Bianca Nightengale-Lee, Shannon Putman, Gabrielle Read-Jasnoff, Amy Shearer Lingo, Anetria Swanson, and Emily Zuccaro.

Content: Launched in 1992, the Civil Society in the Middle East program has brought together dozens of leading scholars to analyze political life through an exploration of civil society within the states of the region. This is the first of two volumes to be published by Brill; it contains original studies of Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Syria, Tunisia, the West Bank and Gaza, as well as the prospects for democratization in the Arab world, the consequences of economic liberalization and contemporary Islamic thought on civil society and democracy. This first volume offers a wealth of new material on unions, political parties and professional syndicates, and other components of civil society, as the authors weigh the prospects for political reform in the Middle East, and provide readable yet richly informed assessments of state-society relations.

Content: Each year, the Center for Oceans Law and Policy of the University of Virginia School of Law hosts a conference on a topical subject. The twenty-fourth meeting was co-sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and held in March 2000 at its Rome headquarters. The conference, Current Fisheries Issues and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations , featured two days of presentations from many of the world's formost experts on global fisheries. The published conference proceedings include papers by the Honorable Frank E. Loy, Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs, Department of State, USA; Rüdiger Wolfrum, Judge at the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea; and Gerald Moore, former Legal Counsel to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Topics discussed include recent developments and issues relating to the UN Fish Stocks Agreement, the Law of the Sea Convention, and the FAO Compliance Agreement. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing is also examined, as well as the International Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and future directions in fisheries management. The papers present enlightened analyses of these important issues. Current Fisheries Issues and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is a landmark collection of expert opinions, compiled through the cooperation of an academic institution and an international organization firmly dedicated to international fisheries law.

Content: While the Arctic Ocean has long been covered with ice, recent changes in climate have caused the ice to melt, spurring both conservation challenges to the region's environment and biodiversity, as well as new opportunities for navigation and natural resource development. Changes in the Arctic Environment and the Law of the Sea offers policy and legal guidance in response to these new challenges. Synthesizing the presentations of leading experts at "Changes in the Arctic Environment and the Law of the Sea" meeting held in May, 2009 in Seward, Alaska, the topics explored in this volume include the political context and scientific background, marine transport, environment and biodiversity, in addition to offshore petroleum and the status of Spitsbergen. A list of selected Internet resources provides links for additional websites, as well as PowerPoint files from presentations given at the meeting. Changes in the Arctic Environment and the Law of the Sea is based on the 33rd Annual Conference of the Center for Oceans Law and Policy, a primary sponsor, along with the Law of the Sea Institute of Iceland as well as with the U.S. Arctic Commission, the University of Alaska (Fairbanks) and the Law of the Sea Institute, Law School (Boalt Hall), University of California, Berkeley.
