    Uniform Title: One Million B.C.
- Ab 12. [Film-Dienst]

Uniform Title: The Mack Sennett collection - Vol. one
Content: Now, for the first time, thanks to Flicker Alley, CineMuseum, and Keystone Films, over 100 of the best surviving Sennett comedies have been gathered from around the world, fully restored, and digitally re-mastered in HD for Blu-ray home video. "The Mack Sennett Collection, Vol. One" features the first 50 of these films presented on a 3-disc Blu-ray set. The Keystone Film Company, under the guidance of pioneering producer and director Mack Sennett, was the birthplace of classic American slapstick comedy. This historic studio was at one time home to a staggering number of silent screen luminaries including Mabel Normand, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Harold Lloyd, Gloria Swanson, Wallace Beery, Harry Langdon, Marie Dressler, Ben Turpin, The Keystone Cops, Ford Sterling, Charley Chase, Al St. John, Mack Swain, Edgar Kennedy, Billy Bevan, Louise Fazenda, Eddie Quillan, and countless others. Even Hollywood icon Charlie Chaplin, still the world's most recognized actor, introduced his beloved Tramp character under the auspices of Keystone. Later, under the Mack Sennett Comedies banner, Sennett went on to produce a new generation of sound comedies, some in early color, featuring the likes of W.C. Fields, Bing Crosby, Lloyd Hamilton, Andy Clyde, and more. [www.flickeralley.com]

Series Statement: Treasures 5: The West (1898-1938) 2
Uniform Title: Treasures 5: The West (1898-1938)
Content: The West has long held pride of place in motion pictures, both as a production center and as the inspiration for that most American of film genres. For audiences today, it is easy to assume that early movies set in the region were just like the sound Westerns that followed. But the films saved by archives tell a far different story. In the years before the "classic" Western, films about the West were as wide open as the region itself. "Treasures 5" brings together 40 early movies showing the West as it's never been seen on DVD. Uniform Title: The mother and the law
Content: After D.W. Griffith's masterpiece "Intolerance" failed at the box office, two of the four tales that make up that movie were extracted and released as their own separate features to try to recoup more money. In the case of "The Woman and the Law", the "modern day" segment, this is ironically fitting, since it was originally conceived as an independent feature before Griffith got the idea of incorporating it into a frame tale. It opens with the Ludlow Massacre but is otherwise a fictional tale, chronicling a man and woman who cannot seem to escape the lower class. One sequence, involving the interference of social workers in the integrity of a family, is wrenching and remains relevant today. Though good, "The Mother and the Law" is best seen in "Intolerance", where the concurrent telling of three other tales adds power to the impact of this one. [www.rinkworks.com]

Uniform Title: Old Isaac, the pawnbroker
Content: A small girl in an urban slum goes out to seek aid for her sick and starving mother. She goes first to the offices of the Amalgamated Association of Charities, where she is caught up in red tape as the case workers ask questions and offer no immediate aid. Desperate, the little girl then goes to a neighborhood pawnshop hoping to get some money for food. She brings in a pair of old shoes which the pawnbroker's assistant rejects. Then she returns with her doll. This innocent gesture of selflessness attracts the attention of old Isaac, who runs the shop. Hearing the little girl's story, he sets out for her apartment where he stops the men who are trying to evict the sick woman. He pays the rent, provides food and medical care, and even gives the girl a big new doll. The portrayal of Old Isaac here contrasts sharply with the comic scheming merchant characters of the time. Not only is Isaac not interested in profiting from others misfortune, he is charitable and compassionate, and in a way that differs sharply from the heartlessness of official charities. It is interesting to note that antisemitism appeared in American cinema almost exclusively in comedies. Melodramas generally presented Jewish characters sympathetically and this film inaugurated a series of films involving compassionate Jewish pawnbrokers. [jewishfilm.org]

    Uniform Title: Intolerance

[Film-Dienst]

Uniform Title: The fall of Babylon
Content: After D.W. Griffith's masterpiece "Intolerance" failed at the box office, two of the four tales that make up that movie were extracted and released as their own separate features to try to recoup more money. "The Fall of Babylon" is the best and most lavish of the four, featuring a set larger than any previously built for a film, 5000 extras, and 250 chariots. The battle scenes are large and sweeping, with some surprisingly violent stunts and effects, yet for all the spectacle, Griffith keeps the essence of the story centered on basically just one character, called only the Mountain Girl, who is instrumental in bringing about the events that come to pass. Her story is given as much attention as Babylon's. It's a wonderful perspective; in rooting a historical saga with a human element, it reminds us that humanity and history are not as segregated as we sometimes inexplicably think. The story stands alone well enough, but it is best to see it as it was intended to be, within the larger framework of "Intolerance". There, the impact of this story is all the greater, as it represents one of several facets of a great human injustice. [www.rinkworks.com]
