In einer wilden Mustangherde wächst ein schwarzes Fohlen zu einem Hengst heran. Unterordnung fällt ihm schwer und so liefert sich der Hengst einen blutigen Kampf mit dem Leithengst, den er verliert. Er muss die Herde verlassen und fortan ohne deren Schutz leben. Der einsame Hengst trifft auf eine verletzte Stute. Beide werden von Olivia, einer leidenschaftlichen Westernreiterin, entdeckt. Zur Genesung werden sie vorübergehend auf der Farm von Olivias Vater einquartiert. Das Loslassen vom Mustang in die freie Wildbahn fällt Olivia wegen der beiderseitigen Sympathie nicht leicht. Die interessante und realistische Geschichte wird abwechselnd aus der Sicht des Hengstes und Olivia erzählt. Alle anderen Charaktere bleiben Randfiguren. Im Epilog weist die Autorin (zuletzt BA 12/05) nachdrücklich darauf hin, dass die Mustangs vom Aussterben bedroht sind. Sensibel und informativ vermittelt A. Frank, dass eine zu enge Bindung der Wildtiere an die Menschen ihnen ihre natürliche Daseinsform raubt. Fachbegriffe werden leider nicht erläutert. Als kritischer Titel neben den Pferde verklärenden Titeln gerne empfohlen.. - Die Wege des eigenwilligen schwarzen Mustangs und der reitbegeisterten Olivia kreuzen sich kurz aber nachdrücklich. Ab 9.
