Der Autor, preisgekrönt für seinen Roman "Gegen die Welt" (s. ID-A 40/11), legt hier quasi zwei Bücher in einem vor, die aber durch die Thematik "Heimat und Wohnen" verknüpft sind. In "Eine Wohnung in der Stadt" berichtet er von seiner verzweifelten Wohnungssuche in Berlin nach Eigenbedarfskündigung durch den Vermieter. Er erzählt packend, anschaulich, sehr persönlich in speziellem Reportagenstil, und doch erfährt man Sachhintergründe über Mietwucher und soziale Umwälzungen in der Hauptstadt. Sein Fazit: Berlin ist keine Heimat mehr, sondern ein bedrohtes Provisorium als Ort des Übergangs. - Im Bericht "Ein Haus auf dem Land" versucht der Autor vergeblich, den ostfriesischen Stammhof seiner Familie vor dem Verkauf und Abriss zu retten. Steingewordene Heimat voller Geschichte und Erinnerung muss neureichem Spekulantentum weichen - auch hier in der Provinz. Ganz nebenbei erforscht Brandt die Geschichte seiner Familie und erzählt so packend, als wäre man dabei gewesen. Immer wieder geht es, wenn auch oft unausgesprochen, um die Frage nach der eigenen Identität, der Herkunft und Zugehörigkeit.
