Series Statement: Clinical Handbooks in Neuropsychology
Content: This comprehensive update of the expert reference offers up-to-date practical advice for professionals working in neuropsychology with older adults. Focusing on fundamentals, common issues, special considerations, and late-life cognitive disorders, respected names in this critical specialty address a wide range of presenting problems and assessment, diagnostic, and treatment concerns. Throughout, coverage pays keen attention to detail, bringing real-world nuance to large-scale concepts and breaking down complex processes into digestible steps. And like its predecessor, the new Handbook features recommendations for test batteries and ends each chapter by extracting its “clinical pearls.” A sampling of the topics covered: · Assessment of depression and anxiety in older adults. · The assessment of change: serial assessments in dementia evaluations. · Elder abuse identification in older adults. · Clinical assessment of postoperative cognitive decline. · Cognitive training and rehabilitation in aging and dementia. · Differentiating mild cognitive impairment and cognitive changes of normal aging. · Evaluating cognition in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Content: Older aged adults face many adversities over the later life course. This edited volume will address the ways in which seniors bounce back from different types and combinations of adversity – termed “resilience”. While research has been accumulating that identifies inherent abilities and external resources needed to adapt and navigate stress-inducing experiences among aging and older adults, gaps remain in understanding the unique elements and processes of resilience. A series of chapters included in this book will address several overarching questions: why do some older individuals/families/communities adapt to adversity better than others; what are modifiable behavioral protective/risk factors related to resilience; and how can we foster resilience at the individual/community level and which approaches show the most promise? The spectrum of aging-related challenges and responses addressed in this book include: mental health; physical/functional health problems; multimorbidity; socio-economic deprivation; social isolation and loneliness; cultural dimensions of loneliness; housing/homelessness problems; and environmental disasters. This book presents cutting-edge science at the conceptual, methodological, empirical and practice levels applied to emerging resilience sub-fields in gerontology. It will also present potential areas of future research, policy and practice linked to these areas. During a period of the most rapid population aging in the US, Canada and many other nations, coupled with heightened global socio-political change, extending our knowledge of resilience will help society to make important adjustments to maximize health and wellness of older individuals. Supporting and enhancing resilience through technological, social and/or community-level advances in geroscience will help those facing adversity to thrive by harnessing, stretching, and leveraging a wide array of potential resources. The promotion of healthier older populations has far-reaching consequences for health care and social/community support systems, both in terms of public health including pandemic response, and the development and implementation of innovations in treatment and practice guidelines.

Content: Moving away from studies of aging in place, this forward-looking Handbook focuses on aging and place, offering a broader scope and more nuanced, complex and enlightening understanding of these two intertwined universals of human experience. Innovative and thought-provoking, the Handbook brings together an international range of top scholars from gerontology and geography to provide state-of-the-art assessments of the topic. Not only examining the latest literature, the chapters also challenge current thinking on the many intersections, opportunities and issues around place and aging that need to be addressed through policy and practice. The Handbook is split into four key sections: looking at different perspectives, core places of aging, making and re-making places for aging, and envisioning a future for the study of aging and place. This Handbook invites students, scholars, practitioners and policy makers to consider a fresh examination of aging and place, offering theoretical, empirical and policy-relevant content. It will be of particular interest to those studying and working within gerontology, human geography, sociology, urban planning and environmental psychology.
