Die Geschichte der Entstehung dieses Tonstückes ist folgende: Constanze sollte eines Tages mit Baron Jacquin, mit dem Mozart und seine Frau befreundet waren, eine Spazierfahrt machen, und wollte ein Band anlegen, das ihr Wolfgang geschenkt. Als sie das Band eine Weile bereits vergeblich gesucht, rief sie ihrem Manne zu: „Liebes Mandl, wo is’s Bandl“, worauf dieser seiner Frau suchen half. Auch Jacquin suchte mit und fand das Band, wollte es aber nicht so leichten Kaufes wieder hergeben. Mozart Mann und Frau, waren von Statur klein, Jacquin war groß und hielt das Band, das die Mozart’schen Eheleute durch Springen zu erhaschen suchten, hoch in die Höhe. Aller Sprünge Mühe war hier umsonst, endlich gab der bellende, zwischen Jacquin’s Füße hineinfahrende Hund den Ausschlag, Jacquin lieferte das Band aus, und meinte, die Scene böte Stoff zu einem komischen Terzett. Mozart ließ sich das nicht umsonst gesagt sein, machte sich den Text im Wiener Dialekt, der mit Constanzens Worten: „Liebes Mandl, wo is’s Bandel“ anhebt, selbst dazu und von da führt dieses komische, immer wirksame Tonstück den Namen das „Bandel-Terzett“
