Sie sollten zum Symbol eines jungen, modernen - eines besseren Deutschland werden: die Olympischen Spiele in München. Doch dann zerstört eine brutale Geiselnahme die bis dahin heiteren Spiele. Ziel des Angriffs eines palästinensischen Terrorkommandos ist die israelische Olympiamannschaft, sind jüdische Sportler - auf deutschem Boden. Den Gastgebern gelingt es nicht, die Geiseln zu befreien. Alle elf sterben, und eine fassungslose Öffentlichkeit muss erkennen, dass die deutschen Sicherheitsbehörden der neuen Dimension des internationalen Terrors nicht gewachsen sind.Mit Hilfe von Spielszenen, hochkarätig besetzt unter anderem mit Peter Lohmeyer, Michael Brandner und Matthias Koeberlin, seltenen Archivbildern, sowie ausführlichen Interviews haben die Spiegel-TV-Autoren Marc Brasse und Florian Huber die dramatischen Ereignisse aus dem Blickwinkel von vier Personen rekonstruiert. Ein Hubschrauberpilot, ein Sonderfahnder der Polizei, ein Sportfunktionär und der damalige Innenminister Hans-Dietrich Genscher schildern den verzweifelten Kampf um das Überleben der Geiseln. Für ihn, so Genscher heute, waren es "die schwersten Stunden meines gesamten Politikerlebens".
