Inhalt: Vor 200 Jahren konnte Karl Friedrich Schinkel seinen Musentempel, das Schauspielhaus am Berliner Gendarmenmarkt, eröffnen. Der Platz hatte einen würdigen Mittelpunkt und Abschluss gefunden und war zu einem der schönsten Europas geworden. Die Menschen waren begeistert, auch von der einzigartigen Schönheit im Innern. Nichts davon könnte heute noch bewundert werden, hätten nicht Architekten, Denkmalpfleger, Maler, Bildhauer und Bauarbeiter der DDR den Schinkel-Bau ein zweites Mal erstehen lassen, diesmal aus den Ruinen des Weltkriegs. Als Konzerthaus eröffnete es 1984, und beim Wiederaufbau gelang etwas Sensationelles: Eine größtmögliche Nähe und Verwandtschaft zum Original, wodurch die Ästhetik und der Geist des bedeutenden Architekten des Klassizismus an den Gendarmenmarkt zurückkehrten. Die von Schinkel geschaffene Anmut und Schönheit, seine starke Ikonografie und sogar der Kunstverstand der Goethezeit wurden so für unsere Gegenwart bewahrt. Die Bildkunst des Schinkel-Baus, überwältigend in ihrer Fülle wie in ihrer Aussagekraft, strahlt seither im und am wiederaufgebauten Apollo-Tempel in nachgeschöpfter Weise und in neuem Glanz. Dieser Band stellt die mehr als 300 bildkünstlerischen Werke vor, untersucht ihre Herkunft, Entstehung, ihre Ikonografie und sucht jeweils die Bezüge zum Schinkel-Original. Die Schöpfer dieser restaurierten, rekonstruierten und neu geschaffenen Kunstwerke werden in Kurzbiografien gewürdigt.
