Content: This volume provides the proceedings of the First European Workshop on Parallel Processing Techniques for Simulation which was held at the end of October 1985. The Workshop was organized within the framework of a joint project sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities under the research part of the multiannua1 programme in the field of Data Processing aming at promoting collaborative research work in the Community. The project involved collaborative work between the Complex Systems Group of the Control Systems Centre at UMIST, the Systems Reliability Service of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and the University of Bergamo, Italy. The aim of this project was to develop decomposition coordination techniques which would be of help in the simulation of complex dynamical systems on parallel processing facilities. One of the major aims of the Workshop was to report on the results produced within the project and to try to relate these to the leading work going on in this field in other centres of excellence. With this in mind, the Proceedings Volume is split up into a number of parts corresponding to the main sessions within the Workshop programme

Content: Exploration of marine minerals by geologists and oceanographers started more than a century ago, but at that time this type of work was largely confined to the intertidal zones and shallow waters, as these areas were easily accessible. There are also records of several investigations carried out during the famous Challenger expedition in the deep sea. Since then, marine geological and mineral explorations have progressed considerably, and our knowledge of the sea at depths ranging from 4000 m to 6000 m has increased accordingly. With this development has emerged also a change in the understanding of the resources of the seabed. At present, the seabed has become a focal point of studies, not only on petroleum and other mineral resources, but also on its own evolution in the history of the earth. The concepts of continental drift and plate tectonics being well established, further surveys and exploration have helped in establishing a relationship between the origin of the oceans and the mineral potential that exists in their floor. The Indian Ocean had its birth with the dismemberment of Gondwanaland. The seabed of the Indian Ocean contains minerals ranging from beach sand and gravel to heavy minerals associated with beach deposits. There are also surface occurrences of phosphorites and manganese nodules and sub-surface deposits of petroleum and various other types of mineral. The author of this book, Dr. G. S. Roonwal, has presented several aspects of mineral resources of the Indian Ocean

Content: and Literature Rev iew Chapter 1 1. INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEW The exploration for oil and gas in ever increasing water depths has given an impetus to research efforts on the behaviour of offshore structures under ocean environment. These structures are continuously subjected to environmental loading because of waves, wind and current. A response analysis is required to assess the safety of offshore structure under severe storm conditions as well as for estimation of damage caused by less severe but more frequently occuring sea states. A majority of the reported failures in the life time of offshore structures are in fact fatigue failures. The offshore structures are usually built in the form of welded tubular structures. The joints of these tubular members experience the fatigue damage mainly due to small defects in welding which act as crack initiators, high stress concentrations and the variable loads. The variable loads due to the ocean waves cause cyclic stress variation in the structural members and the accumu lated effect of these stresses results in the fatigue failure
