Philipp Otto Runge (1777 - 1810) war neben Caspar David Friedrich der bedeutendste Künstler der deutschen Romantik. Er suchte nach der paradiesischen Ursprache, durch die auch die Kunst zu erneuern wäre. Neben religiös-metaphysischen Themen widmete er sich in seiner Malerei vor allem dem Portrait und dem Selbstportrait.
