Content: Vivre sa vie was a turning point for Jean-Luc Godard and remains one of his most dynamic films, combining brilliant visual design with a tragic character study. The lovely Anna Karina, Godard’s greatest muse, plays Nana, a young Parisian who aspires to be an actress but instead ends up a prostitute, her downward spiral depicted in a series of discrete tableaux of daydreams and dances. Featuring some of Karina and Godard’s most iconic moments—from her movie theater vigil with The Passion of Joan of Arc to her seductive pool-hall strut—Vivre sa vie is a landmark of the French New Wave that still surprises at every turn. Seeking inspiration, the poet follows the princess from the world of the living to the land of the dead, through Cocteau's famous mirrored portal. Content: Conversation between Jean-Luc Godard and Fritz Lang filmed for French television. Sometimes the two directors talk about their working methods, and at others Godard as a critic queries Lang about his own working methods. Lang prefers to think of a director as a psychoanalyst. The conversation is intercut with extended clips from Godard's "Le Mépris" and Lang's "M". The film was published in 1967 as part of the series "Cinéastes de notre temps", supervised by André Labarthe.
