Der Autor, em. Professor für Physik, gibt hier einen Überblick über das bisher wichtigste Jahrhundert der Physik, das 20. Jahrhundert. Es begann 1900 mit der Entdeckung des Wirkungsquantums durch Max Planck, gefolgt von der Aufklärung der Atomstruktur mit Atomkern und Atomhülle. Weitere revolutionäre Entwicklungen waren mit der Relativitätstheorie und der Quantentheorie gegeben. Sie brachten nicht nur ein neues Verständnis von Raum und Zeit, von der Struktur der Materie und der Entdeckung von Leptonen und Quarks als fundamentalen Bausteinen der Materie. Dazu kommen Kräfte zwischen den Teilchen, die als starke und schwache Wechselwirkung bezeichnet werden. Charakteristisch ist, dass sich erst mithilfe der Quantenmechanik viele Erscheinungen in makroskopischer Materie verstehen lassen. Andererseits finden viele Erkenntnisse der modernen Physik inzwischen breite Anwendung bei Leitern und Halbleitern, Lasern und in der gesamten Computer- und Kommunikationstechnologie.
