Der Autor sieht den Geburtsort der Nudel in Mesopotamien, Syrien oder im Irak. Via Seidenstraße könnte sie sich dann ausgebreitet haben, so auch nach China. Von dort hat sie keineswegs Marco Polo nach Italien gebracht, das ist wohl eher den Arabern zuzuschreiben. Das Buch ist sehr faktenreich, flüssig geschrieben (Neidhart ist Schweizer Journalist und langjähriger Moskaukorrespondent der "Weltwoche" gewesen und hat sämtliche Sowjetrepubliken bereist). Etwas stark asienlastig (der Autor ist mit einer Chinesin verheiratet), aber die Nudel in Europa wird ausführlich gewürdigt, von der Pasta bis zu den schwäbischen Maultaschen. Etwas zu ausschweifend dargestellt findet sich das Verhalten seiner kleinen Tochter Mio (der das Buch gewidmet ist) bei Restaurantbesuchen.
