Die Geschichte führt in die Nachkriegszeit. Der Alltag hat sich normalisiert, aber es mangelt an vielem, deshalb ist es auch gut, etwas zusammenzurücken. Ewelina und ihre Mutter wohnen zusammmen mit Oma und Opa, Tante, Onkel und den beiden jüngeren Cousins. Der Vater ist nur noch Erinnerung. Tauschgeschäfte werden gemacht, so ermöglicht Opas selbstgemachter Essig die Ausleihe von Büchern. Die Freundin Annelie vermittelt ihr Grundkenntnisse im Flötenspiel gegen Filmbilder zum Abpausen. Ewelina steckt voller Ideen, zu Weihnachten möchte sie eine Oper aufführen. Beim Radiohören mit Opa kam sie auf diese Idee. Opa hat für so etwas am meisten Verständnis. Für Kinder von heute ist die vorgestellte Kinderwelt fast exotisch. Eine Welt ohne Autos, ohne Fernseher, mit materiellen Einschränkungen zwar, aber auch mit vielen Freiheiten. Die liebenswerten Zeichnungen vermitteln einen Eindruck von dieser anderen Zeit. Der ruhige Erzählfluss fordert von den Kindern Geduld und auch eine Portion Weltwissen. Ein empfehlenswertes Buch zum Vorlesen, zu empfehlen auch als Klassenlektüre. . - Ewelina und Opa haben jeweils eigene Vorstellungen und kommen gerade deshalb gut miteinander aus.
