Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte sind die Anschauungen über Raum, Zeit und Bewegung den verschiedenartigsten Wandlungen unterworfen gewesen. Gerade in jüngster Zeit scheint sich wieder eine große Umwälzung zu vollziehen. Es ist die Relativitätstheorie Einsteins, die nicht nur den Physiker, sondern auch den Philosophen zur Stellungnahme zwingt. Mannigfacher Art sind ihre Beziehungen zur Philosophie. Um dieselben möglichst eindeutig festlegen zu können, müssen die ebenso tiefliegenden wie weitgreifenden Probleme der Relativitätstheorie, ihre Grundlagen und ihre Konsequenzen, von erkenntnistheoretischer Seite beleuchtet werden. Die weit verbreitete Ansicht, daß die Relativitätstheorie mit unserer früheren Auffassung von Raum und Zeit gänzlich aufräumt, daß auch die philosophische Formulierung dieser Begriffe - wie sie uns besonders seit Kant geläufig ist - auf eine völlig neue Basis gestellt werden müsse, bedarf kritischer Untersuchung. - Zu diesem Zwecke muß die Relativitatstheorie selbst und der Stand des Problems bis zu ihrer Aufstellung - ganz besonders die kantische Lehre - zum Gegenstand eingehender Erörterung gemacht werden. Eine lückenlose, historische Darstellung der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Raum-Zeit-Problems und des Bewegungsbegriffes ist hier nicht beabsichtigt. Nur wenige Punkte derselben, die in direktem Zusammenhang mit unserer Fragestellung stehen, sollen hervorgehoben werden, so daß der Stand der Wissenschaft bezüglich dieses Problems - wie ihn die Relativitätstheorie vorfand - beurteilt werden kann.
