Harrison lehrt Literaturwissenschaft in Kalifornien (zuletzt "Wälder", ID-G 42/92). Sein neues Buch ist eine interdisziplinäre Kulturgeschichte des Alterns. Ausführlich werden Themen wie "Zeit", das Alter der Menschheit oder das Alter schlechthin essayistisch und mithilfe ungewöhnlich zahlreicher Fremdworte abgehandelt. Der schwer zugängliche Text bezieht evolutionstheoretische, soziologische, philosophische und literaturtheoretische Aspekte mit ein. Harrison kritisiert, dass die Jugendlichkeit und damit die Unreife heute zum alles beherrschenden Prinzip unserer Zivilisation geworden sind, die alle Lebensfelder durchsetzen. Er bezeichnet dies als "kulturelle Neotenie", die zu einer "Generationenkonfusion" führe. Häufig werden die "alten Griechen" oder klassische Dichter zitiert und interpretiert (vgl. zum Thema den Titel von H. Bachmaier: "Lektionen des Alters", der leicht verständlich vorrangig Begriffsbestimmungen vornimmt; ID-G 49/15).
