Die alte Frage Was ist der Mensch?" in einem Film des Japaners Shindo (geb. 1912; "Die nackte Insel", 1961), der eine blutige Legende aus den mittelalterlichen Kriegen seines Landes so abschreckend wie brillant ins Bild setzt. Inmitten einer riesigen Schilflandschaft hausen in einer Bambushütte zwei Frauen. Im Kampf ums nackte Dasein lauern sie desertierenden Kriegern auf, töten sie und verkaufen deren Habe gegen Hirse und Reis an einen Händler... Im Aufbau der Handlung an der klassischen Tragödie orientiert, rückt der Film Bilder von zarter Poesie neben solche von brutalem Realismus: Eine schockierende Anklage des Krieges und seiner demoralisierenden Zwänge.
