Frida Kahlo kommt 1907 bei Mexiko-Stadt als Kind einer mexikanischen Mutter und eines europaischen Vaters zur Welt. Das Schicksal schlagt schon in jungen Jahren zu. Frida erkrankt an Kinderlahmung, was ihr ein verkurztes Bein einbringt. 1925 erleidet sie einen tragischen Unfall, dessen schmerzhafte Folgen ihr ein Leben lang zu schaffen machen. Wahrend ihrer langen Bettlagrigkeit beginnt sie zu malen. Spater lernt Frida den bereits bekannten Maler Diego Rivera kennen, der ihre grosse Liebe wird und den sie auch heiratet. In Fridas kraftvollen Bildern sind sowohl eigene Lebens- und Leidenserfahrungen, wie auch ihre tiefe Beziehung zur Natur und ihrer Heimat ausgedruckt.
