Seit seiner Gründung 1947 durch Jean Vilar entwickelte sich das Festival von Avignon zu dem bedeutendsten Theaterfestival Frankreichs und einem der berühmtesten der Welt. Die Modernität und Radikalität seiner Aufführungen sorgen jährlich im Juli für Provokation, Begeisterung und Kritik. Eingebettet in das helle Licht der Provence und die Stadt, die mit dem Papstpalast und der berühmten Brücke ein einzigartiges Denkmal der Kulturgeschichte darstellt, fand das Festival vom rein klassischen Theater zu neuen Formen in Verbindung mit Tanz und bildender Kunst. Der hervorragende Dokumentarfilm vermittelt Geschichte und Atmosphäre des Festivals anlässlich seines 60jährigen Bestehens 2006 mit zahlreichen Interviews und Archivaufnahmen (z. B. mit Gérard Philipe, Maria Casarès, von Maurice Béjart, Pina Bausch, Ariane Mnouchkine und Robert Wilson) bis hin zu Stücken des Festivals 2005 (z.
