Dabei spart sie schmerzliche Themen wie Artenschwund und Lebensraumzerstörung nicht aus. Die Journalistin gibt auch Anregungen, wie man sich die Welt der Vögel als Anfänger erschließen kann. Ihren Bericht gliedert sie in 21 Kapitel, denen jeweils eine Farbzeichnung von Florian Frick vorangestellt ist. Das sorgfältig gestaltete Buch ist verständlich und anschaulich geschrieben. Die Darstellung ist unaufgeregt, die beobachteten Vögel gehören heimischen Arten an. Der Titel wird wahrscheinlich von denjenigen mit dem größten Gewinn gelesen, die bereits ein gewisses Auge für Vögel haben. Mit einer für Einsteiger geeigneter Bibliografie.
