Abstract: The evaluation of a juvenile diversion program was approached through the development of multiple lines of evidence bearing on each of the two major program goals: providing a community-based alternative for arrested juveniles who otherwise would have been referred to the juvenile justice system and reducing juvenile delinquency. Convergent results from various measures, research designs, and data stratifications indicated that the program had little success in decreasing referrals to the juvenile justice system but produced a positive delinquency reduction effect (concentrated among less serious offenders). These results are discussed in terms of (1) their significance for the diversion program and (2) the nature of the multiple methodology that produced them.

Abstract: A total of 111 men whose partners were either receiving an early first trimester abortion or obtaining contraception were compared on personality characteristics, attitudes toward sex-related topics, and variables describing their relationship with their partners. As predicted, the major differences between these groups were in the areas of attitudes and sexual relationship with partner. Men in the contraceptive group expressed more liberal attitudes toward sex and contraceptive practices as well as a higher frequency of coitus than the men in the abortion partner group. The data were further analyzed by dividing the abortion partner group into those men who had used contraception in the past and those who had not done so. The finding that more conservative attitudes toward sex-related topics are held by the noncontracepting men, particularly those involved with an abortion, lends support to Byrne's theoretical formulations concerning the importance of attitudes in determining contraceptive behavior.

Abstract: It was hypothesized that increasing the sound level of the emotional expressions of a crowd would heighten arousal in observers and enhance their performance of dominant mimetic responses. Observers viewed a videotaped arm wrestling match under two levels of crowd noise (high and low). The results show that the observers' arm activity was greater under high level than low level crowd noise; this difference was most apparent after a brief time period. In addition, arousal (as measured by skin conductance) was greater under high level than low level crowd noise. These findings are interpreted in terms of drive and ideomotor theories.

Abstract: While Susan W. Gray is known primarily for her work with the Early Training Project, a pioneering early intervention program with low-income black children, she has also influenced the development of school psychology and the creation of Early Childhood Education as a discipline. In addition, in her own quiet way, she has supported the career development of a number of professional women who have had impact on child development, early childhood education, and school psychology. Four major themes are used to present Susan Gray's biography: (1) being ahead of her time in terms of thinking which allowed her to take advantage of opportunities; (2) the role of serendipity versus long-range planning of career trajectories; (3) specific influences on her as a woman; and (4) a lifetime of courage and dedication. Examples of work which was in advance of psychology included work in early intervention with low-income children, an emphasis on the use of scientific experimental methodology in field research, an eclectic approach which crossed disciplinary boundaries, a consultative approach to school psychology, and the inclusion of affective and cognitive education in intervention curricula. The influences on her as a woman, including a rural background and attendance at a women's college helped shape her career commitment and ability to play other than the traditional female role, while maintaining her femininity.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of upper-body-quadrant pain among ultrasonographers and to evaluate the association between individual ergonomics, musculoskeletal disorders, and occurrence of neck pain. Method: A hundred and ten ( N = 110) Belgian and Dutch male and female hospital ultrasonographers were consecutively enrolled in the study. Data on work-related ergonomic and musculoskeletal disorders were collected with an electronic inquiry, including questions regarding ergonomics (position of the screen, high-low table, and ergonomic chair), symptoms (neck pain, upper-limb pain), and work-related factors (consecutive working hours a day, average working hours a week). Results: Subjects with the screen on their left had significantly more neck pain (odds ratio [OR] = 3.6, p = .0286). Depending on the workspace, high-low tables increased the chance of developing neck pain (OR = 12.9, p = .0246). A screen at eye level caused less neck pain (OR = .22, p = .0610). Employees with a fixed working space were less susceptible to arm pain (OR = 0.13, p = .0058). The prevalence of arm pain was significantly higher for the vascular department compared to radiology, urology, and gynecology departments (OR = 9.2, p = .0278). Conclusions: Regarding prevention of upper-limb pain in ultrasonograph, more attention should be paid to the work environment and more specialty to the ultrasound workstation layout. Primary ergonomic prevention could provide a painless work situation for the ultrasonographer. Application: Further research on the ergonomic conditions of ultrasonography is necessary to develop ergonomic solutions in the work environment that will help to alleviate neck and arm pain.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to evaluate bidirectional associations between peer acceptance and both emotion and effortful control during kindergarten ( N = 301). In both the fall and spring semesters, we obtained peer nominations of acceptance, measures of positive and negative emotion based on naturalistic observations in school (i.e., classroom, lunch/recess), and observers’ reports of effortful control (i.e., inhibitory control, attention focusing) and emotions (i.e., positive, negative). In structural equation panel models, peer acceptance in fall predicted higher effortful control in spring. Effortful control in fall did not predict peer acceptance in spring. Negative emotion predicted lower peer acceptance across time for girls but not for boys. Peer acceptance did not predict negative or positive emotion over time. In addition, we tested interactions between positive or negative emotion and effortful control predicting peer acceptance. Positive emotion predicted higher peer acceptance for children low in effortful control.

Abstract: Associations between ambient sounds and accuracy of pharmacists' prescription-filling performance in a pharmacy was studied. Pharmacists were videotaped as they filled prescriptions each workday for 23 days. Each filled prescription was inspected by the investigator. Deviations from the physician's written order were considered errors. Videotape analysis was used to detect unpredictable, predictable, uncontrollable, and controllable sounds. A within-subjects case control study design was employed to determine whether the frequency of ambient sounds was significantly different when prescriptions with errors, compared with those without errors, were filled. Loudness, in terms of equivalent sound levels (L eq ) for each half hour, was analyzed for a relationship to dispensing error rate. A mean dispensing error rate of 3.23% was found. Unpredictable sounds, controllable sounds, and noise had a significant effect on pharmacists which resulted in a decreased dispensing error rate. These results suggest that the quality of pharmacists' performance is not adversely affected by ambient sound. As equivalent sound levels increased, the error rate increased to a point, then decreased.

Abstract: An investigation was conducted of differences between ratings provided by Florida practicing public school teachers and teacher trainers on knowledge and skill statements used in the development of teacher subject matter knowledge tests for initial teacher certification in the fields of (a) elementary education, (b) English,(c) gifted, and (d) specific learning disability. Respondents rated each statement on 5-point Likert scales on three dimensions: (a) job relatedness, (b) frequency of use, and (c) importance for initial certification. Surveys for each of the four fields were sent to Florida practicing teachers and to teacher training faculty. A two-stage cluster PPS sampling yielded eight response rates which ranged from 41% to 63% across the four fields. Statistically significant differences on 29 of the 60 factor comparisons were obtained between the two major group of raters (teachers vs teacher-trainers). Generally, teacher trainers registered higher ratings than did practicing teachers on all variables, especially in English.

Abstract: Culturally and racially responsive practice continues to be a common challenge among Mental Health Practitioners (MHPs). To the authors’ knowledge, this systematic review was the first to collate and synthesize clients’ perspectives of MHPs’ cultural and racial awareness and responsiveness from around the world. Original studies that were published between 2010 and 2021 reporting on qualitative data about clients’ perspectives regarding MHPs’ cultural-racial awareness and responsiveness were included in the review. The studies’ key findings that addressed this review’s question were synthesized and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. This review found 48 papers that met inclusion criteria, which represented the views of 652 clients across 10 countries. Three major themes and eight subthemes were established that concerned characteristics of the MHP, the client, and the therapeutic alliance. The results of this review indicate individual and systemic factors that influence mental health access for people from culturally and racially marginalized groups. Ongoing training of MHPs, increased racial and cultural representation among MHPs, inclusive physical settings, and reduced discrimination by MHPs are among the key findings and directions based on the results of this review.
