Die embryonale Entwicklung im Mutterleib galt lange als Automatismus, der von genetischen Erbinformationen gesteuert wird, mittlerweile hat sich jedoch die Erkenntnis durchgesetzt, dass die vorgeburtliche Entwicklung des Kindes im Wesentlichen auch von der Beziehung zur Mutter mitgeprägt ist. Lernprozesse setzen bereits im Mutterleib ein, und die körperliche und psychische Entwicklung des Kindes gehen Hand in Hand. Nach der Darstellung der pränatalen Entwicklung von der Befruchtung bis zur Geburt folgt im 2. Teil "die Geburt der Eltern": in 6 Kapiteln, 4 davon Gastbeiträge von Fachkollegen, werden die unterschiedlichen Herausforderungen, die auf die werdenden Eltern zukommen, thematisiert: der Umgang mit Ängsten, pränatale Diagnostik, Aufbau einer Beziehung zum Ungeborenen, die Paarbeziehung und Hilfe und Unterstützung bei einer schwierigen Geburt.
