Harrison erzählt in ihrem "prähistorischen" Erstlingsroman die dramatische Geschichte des Mädchens Chagak, das vor 9000 Jahren auf einer der Inseln vor der Nordwestküste Amerikas, den heutigen Aleuten, lebt. Nachdem ihr Dorf vom feindlichen Stamm der Kurzen Menschen zerstört und alle Bewohner getötet wurden, macht sie sich auf den gefahrenvollen Weg zu den mit ihr verwandten Waljägern. Unterwegs trifft sie einen alten Elfenbeinschnitzer, der sie wie eine Tochter aufnimmt und sie vor weiteren Gefahren beschützt. Auf dem Hintergrund jahrelanger Recherchen über das von Naturgewalten bedrohte Leben der Ureinwohner Amerikas, ihrer Kultur und ihrer Mythen wird der Überlebenskampf der jungen Frau und ihrer Suche nach Glück überzeugend dargestellt. Empfehlenswerter Roman aus vorgeschichtlicher Zeit, der wie die Ayla-Serie von Auel (zuletzt "Ayla und das Tal der Grossen Mutter: BA 6/91) breit einzusetzen ist. [Ulrich Kühne]
