Serie: The narrative study of lives
Inhalt: Therapy is the process of developing a narrative that helps bring integration and coherence to a chaotic life. In Healing Plots: The Narrative Basis of Psychotherapy, the third volume in the series The Narrative Study of Lives, editors Amia Lieblich, Dan P. McAdams, and Ruthellen Josselson bring together a diverse group of psychotherapist-scholars to explore the relationship between storytelling and therapy. Drawing directly from practice experiences with a wide variety of clients, the chapter authors present illuminating case studies of lives being examined in therapy. The authors ground their contributions in the shared theory that effective therapeutic interventions often involve the co-construction of healing narratives in the face of personal, moral, and social adversity. Using a variety of perspectives, contexts, and cultural settings, the authors examine how therapists and clients negotiate narrative conflict and complexity, present types of stories that significantly animate the psychotherapeutic process, and discuss how life stories can change through, and as a result of, therapy. By recounting and deconstructing therapeutic experiences with clients, contributors collectively demonstrate how narratives shape and humanize therapists' work, and how the process of therapy enriches our understanding of narratives and their place in contemporary studies of human identity. Inhalt: "This volume is an effort to cast a wide net in order to bring the meanings of others to the forefront of psychological investigation, to illuminate what is an often obscured background. Efforts to measure relationships, although they have produced large bodies of research studies, inevitably simplify and decontextualize relationship. Relationships require narrative to evoke the empathy and multilayered attention necessary for one person to have some sense of the nature of someone else's relational experience. The authors of the chapters in this volume use a range of narrative modes of inquiry to describe and then conceptualize significant aspects of interpersonal experience. All begin with some sort of text that expresses textured aspects of human relationship and then initiate a conversation between the contextualized phenomenological account and a psychological understanding. In this volume, we showcase the application of a range of creative means of gathering and analyzing narrative data. The chapters here span approaches that involve inductive interpretation of novels and biographies, coding of structured interviews, and discourse analysis of an Internet forum. The other chapters involve authors' carefully detailed thematic readings of interview-derived texts to arrive at some higher level of abstraction or understanding within a theoretical framework. We think this volume will be of interest to all who seek a more complex understanding of the experience of relationship in human development as well as to life history researchers. Those who work with people--counselors, therapists, and educators--can profit from the insight these authors provide into the multilayered aspects of human interaction. Students of developmental, personality, and clinical psychology would do well to use these presentations to reflect on the location of human relationship in context and in its many narratively structured possibilities for meaning"--Introduction. Serie: The narrative study of lives
Inhalt: Brings together a diverse group of narrative research scholars who share their actual experiences of learning, teaching, working, and growing in this field. It is argued that the wide variety of innovative approaches and expansive theoretical perspectives they offer will be helpful to those who are learning or teaching qualitative methods. Chapter authors challenge readers to think about narrative research in its own context while also maintaining original, personal voices that underscore the value this field places on an individual's communication of his or her experience. By revealing their struggles with qualitative research's emerging and evolving processes and their experiences working with students at various educational levels, these authors arm teachers with tools that anticipate common pitfalls and frustrations. In addition, the authors relate professional triumphs that illustrate effective teaching--and doing--of narrative research. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved)

Inhalt: "In Identity and Story: Creating Self in Narrative, the fourth volume in the Narrative Study of Lives series, Dan P. McAdams, Ruthellen Josselson, and Amia Lieblich (2006) bring together an interdisciplinary and international group of creative researchers and theorists to examine how the stories we tell create our identities. An increasing number of psychologists argue that people give meaning to their lives by constructing and internalizing self-defining stories. The contributors to this volume explore how, beginning in adolescence and young adulthood, our narrative identities become the stories we live by. This volume addresses the most important and difficult issues in the study of narrative identity, including questions of unity and multiplicity in stories, the controversy over individual versus societal authorship of stories, and the extent to which stories typically show stability or growth in the narrator. The detailed examination of excerpts from stories told to researchers and the analysis of published memoirs, together with the contributors' insights into narrative psychology, make this provocative volume a rich, research-based exploration into how our lives may be the product of the stories we tell"--Cover. Inhalt: Analyzes personalized life narratives to understand significant turning points in the human life course and to answer this central question: How do people make meaning out of the transitions in their lives? Among the transitions examined are adolescent identity struggles, the move from school to work, divorce, turning points in moral development, setbacks in professional careers, the onset of illness, recovery from addiction, and dramatic epiphanies and conversions in life involving crime, confession, and redemption. The stories that are made and told about major transitions in life contribute to identity, help the process of coping with challenges and stress, shape how the future is seen, help to determine the nature of interpersonal relationships, and position us in the social and cultural world. Inhalt: Generativity is the adult's concern for and commitment to promoting the next generation through parenting, teaching, mentoring, and generating products and outcomes that aim to benefit youth and foster the development and well-being of those individuals and social systems that outlive the self. Almost 50 yrs ago, Erikson introduced this concept in his 8-stage model of human development as the 7th stage of the life cycle, generation vs stagnation. /// "Generativity and Adult Development" brings together contemporary thinking and research being done on the psychological, social, and cultural aspects of generativity in adult lives. The book draws together a roster of distinguished scholars from the fields of life-span development, personality and social psychology, clinical and counseling psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, and the arts.
