Ihr Mann hat sie nur wegen der Mitgift geheiratet und setzt in Paris sein ausschweifendes Leben fort. Er betrügt sie mit einer Kurtisane und verschleudert ihr Geld am Spieltisch. Sein bester Freund ist der Marquis de Cinq-Mars, der Günstling Ludwig XIII. In einem Frankreich, das eher vom mächtigen Kardinal Richelieu beherrscht wird, zetteln die unzufriedenen Adligen eine Verschwörung an, deren Kopf der Bruder des Königs ist. Gabrielles Mann ist dadurch in Lebensgefahr. Das kümmert sie jedoch kaum, da ihr Mann sie vernachlässigt und sie, wie durch ein Wunder, ihre Jugendliebe Angelo in Paris wiedertrifft. Werden sie eine gemeinsame Zukunft haben? Wie in ihren anderen Titeln (zuletzt ID-A 37/14) erzählt die Autorin vor dem Hintergrund der französischen Geschichte, die sie gut kennt, eine dramatische Liebesgeschichte. Die edle Heldin und der Bösewicht durchleben unwahrscheinliche Abenteuer. Stilistisch einfach, kann der Band als leichte historische Unterhaltung dienen. Ilse Nebelung
