Eine gut lesbare Einführung in die Vielfalt der indianischen Hochkulturen Mexikos, die auch die Zeit vor den Maya ausführlich beleuchtet. Rezension: Eingeführte Reihe. Basiert auf einem als "DuMont-Schnellkurs" erschienenen, weniger umfangreichen Band (2004), der sich ganz gut ausgeliehen hat. Die ansprechende, gut illustrierte Gestaltung ist einer wissenschaftlicheren, dafür deutlich erweiterten Aufmachung gewichen. Der gröe︢re Umfang ist vornehmlich der breiteren Darstellung der frühen Hochkulturen vor den Maya und der Darstellung von Religion, Kunst und Kommunikation (vor allem Schrift) in den altmexikanischen Kulturen geschuldet. Dafür ist die Geschichte des Übergangs zur heutigen Gesellschaft deutlich reduziert. Immer noch eine gut lesbare Einführung in die Kulturen vor der Konquista, das einem breiteren Publikum auch neuere Erkenntnisse aus der in den letzten ergiebigen archäologischen Forschung vermittelt. Ein empfehlenswerter Titel, der schon wegen des unschlagbaren Preises als Ersatz für den Titel aus der Schnellkurs-Reihe eingestellt werden kann; auch neben B. Riese: "Untergang der Sonnengötter" (2010) und "Maya und Azteken" (2009). (2)
