Abstract:
The Relationship Between Mensural Notation and Other Measuring Systems in the Fourteenth Century - In the early fourteenth century composers and theorists developed a mensural system with appropriate signs. This system grew out of the system of Roman fractions (which was used throughout the Middle Ages) and medieval ways of reckoning time. Both systems share the same conceptual premisses : first, a central value multiplied into larger values and divided into smaller ones ; secondly, a hierarchical system of values, each of which is divided into two or three parts ; and thirdly (and this applies particularly to the Italian notational system), the divisibility of the central value into smaller units. Moreover, the mensuration signs derive from the symbols associated with Roman fractions.
