Joseph Fraunhofer hat es ab ca. 1813 entdeckt: Ein System dunkler Linien im zerlegten Licht der Sonne, die Jahrzehnte später als Absorptionslinien chemischer Elemente in den Sternatmosphären enträtselt wurden - damit war der Grundstein für die Astrophysik gelegt. Der Autor, jahrzehntelang eine hoch geachtete Koryphäe für Physik und Astronomie am Deutschen Museum in München und heute Professor für Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften an der LMU, beschreibt in der gewohnt brillanten Weise, wie diese von Fraunhofers Entdeckung initiierte neue Wissenschaft entstand, wie die Entschlüsselung der Spektrallinien unser Bild vom Sternenhimmel veränderte und damit zu einer neuen wissenschaftlichen "Landschaft" beigetragen hat. Anknüpfend u.a. an die neuartige ästhetische Erscheinung, die die Darstellung der Spektren der Sterne damals mit sich brachte, stellt er eine Analogie zur aufblühenden Landschaftsmalerei in den Epochen der Romantik und des Impressionismus her, die damals ebenfalls viele neue Impulse erfuhr
