    Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic was, and is, managed by prevention measures, based on limited contact in public spaces and general restrictions on freedom of movement. Especially social distancing needs space. So the question was investigated: How social distancing was implemented within the prison system? Reducing overcrowding and suspending prison sentences, are regarded as key elements in combating the pandemic in the justice system. Which further prevention measures could be concretely implemented in Swiss prisons to contain the pandemic? Which conditions as a framework were necessary for reaching this? To investigate this, the Swiss National Science Foundation funded a project for an analysis of institutional strategies in the implementation of prevention measures concerning the COVID-19 pandemic in prisons. Surveys were conducted in closed and open institutions of the judicial system across Switzerland, as well as in external residential and work settings, to document successful strategies and identify certain problems.

    Abstract: For students who decide to enroll in college after high school graduation, there are numerous factors to consider when searching for potential matches and choosing from the available options. Ten recent high school graduates who participated in self-selected, ability-grouped, advanced academic courses in high school were interviewed at the end of senior year. These students shared valuable lessons they learned about the college decision-making process to offer guidance to students beginning the college search, and the adults, in and out of school, who help them make those choices. Participants offered advice about preparing to apply to college, the application process, and related social and emotional considerations. Nine key themes were identified in which participants encouraged early exploration of career-related interests, a focus on person-environment fit, and managing expectations. Implications for students, parents, and school personnel are also discussed.

    Abstract: Programs for gifted and talented education should be guided by research-based practices, but states’ policies vary in their recommendations for programming, and in how they hold local education agencies accountable for implementing those recommendations. State plans for gifted and talented education rely on the voluntary compliance of districts to implement policies meeting students’ advanced academic needs and providing opportunities for talent development. State plans for gifted education may outline expectations, but leave much about the implementation up to districts. Even within a state, gifted education services vary widely across districts and individual schools. This research identified 11 state plans for gifted education that included guidance on identification, curriculum, service options, professional development, and program evaluation. Through thematic analysis, eight primary themes and three secondary themes were identified, which demonstrate the necessity of ongoing program evaluation balancing the need for standardization with the need to adapt policies to fit local contexts.
