Neuere Monographien über den Maler des Isenheimer Altars Matthias Grünewald (gestorben 1528) sind rar. Dieses Begleitbuch einer Ausstellung 2002 in Aschaffenburg kennzeichnen Themenbreite, wissenschaftliche Gründlichkeit und Verständlichkeit. In 8 Aufsätzen untersuchen die Autoren verschiedene Aspekte der an überlieferten Fakten armen Biografie des Malers, seiner Persönlichkeit und seines Werkes und den zeitgeschichtlichen Hintergrund. Zu den 188 Exponaten im Katalogteil gehören neben Gemälden und Zeichnungen von Grünewald Gegenstände aus seinem Nachlass, Werke seiner Zeitgenossen (Dürer, Cranach u.a.), Reliquien, Gebetbücher u.v.m., viele davon kleinformatig abgebildet, alle ausführlichst erläutert.
