Gerhard Richter ist derzeit der wohl berühmteste Maler weltweit. Sein "Stammheim-Zyklus" und die Familienbilder und Landschaften wurden zu Stil-Ikonen des ausgehenden letzten Jahrhunderts. Aus Richters Ouvre stammen auch zwei in den 60er-Jahren entstandene Bilder, die ein Kapitel tief dunkler deutscher Geschichte illustrieren. "Tante Marianne" zeigt Richters schizophrene Tante Marianne Schönfelder, die, zuerst zwangssteriliert, im Februar 1945 im Rahmen von Hitlers Euthanasie-Kampagne ermordet wurde. Die großformatige "Familie am Meer" dominiert der Gynäkologe Professor Dr. Heinrich Eufinger -- Gerhard Richters Schwiegervater. Zwei Bilder, ein unwissentlich gemaltes, gespenstisches Stück Geschichtsschreibung. Dieser Verstrickung von den Ausmaßen einer griechischen Tragödie leuchtet Jürgen Schreiber eindrucksvoll in die Wurzeln.
