Inhalt: The body of this report consists of five sections. Section one is an introduction to the JBE program and the context for the lease research on Tanna. Section two provides a profile of some of the relevant historical and economic features of the island and aspects related to the structure of governance and civil society organization. This is followed in section three by a summary of key findings regarding the 64 leases studied on Tanna. Section four presents more detail on the real uses of the land by analyzing the leases according to seven themes or categories: commercial or commercial tourism, schools, infrastructure, securing custom land, communications towers, agribusiness, and churches. Finally, section five discusses a small sample of non-lease-based enterprises as a preliminary study into investment decision making. Further details of the research methodology are included in the annex to the report

Inhalt: The aim of Sharia Incorporated is to provide unbiased and contextual information about a topic that has of late been hijacked by politics in the Muslim world as well as in the West. Sharia Incorporated, written by laudable international scholars, is an ambitious study of the incorporation of Islamic law traditions into national legal systems. The book also explores the sensitive topic of 'Western' human rights and other rule of law standards in a Muslim world. It provides an in-depth analysis of the role of sharia in the historical and legal formation of twelve representative Muslim states, with a unique comparison of key issues raised by the 'Islamic awakening' of recent decades. In the preface Jan Michiel Otto goes to the heart of the prevailing environment in which Western discourses tend to oversimplify the substance and effect of Islam and sharia.Watch a clarification on the book by Jan Michiel Otto here

    Serie: De Gruyter Textbook
Inhalt: Biographical note: Hans-Otto Georgii, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Germany.
Inhalt: Main description: This second revised and extended edition presents the fundamental ideas and results of both, probability theory and statistics, and comprises the material of a one-year course. It is addressed to students with an interest in the mathematical side of stochastics. Stochastic concepts, models and methods are motivated by examples and developed and analysed systematically. Some measure theory is included, but this is done at an elementary level that is in accordance with the introductory character of the book. A large number of problems offer applications and supplements to the text.
Inhalt: Review text: "The textbook is based on a series of lectures taught by the author for many years at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Munich. The material of the book covers two one-semester courses in probability and mathematical statistics, respectively. All chapters are equipped with exercises of varying degrees of difficulty that help to clarify the concepts. The first part of the book is an introduction to probability theory. The material is presented using little of the measure-theoretical background but rather application-oriented examples that preserve its introductory character. Topics range from classical probability distributions to conditional distributions and limit theorems. A short introduction to Markov chains is also given. The second part of the book gives an introduction to mathematical statistics and describes main statistical procedures: parameter and interval estimation, hypothesis testing, linear regression and basics of the analysis of variance approach. The book can be used by undergraduate mathematics majors but also by science and engineering students who wish not only to apply probability and statistics but also to understand how the methods work."Vladimir P. Kurenok, MathSciNet

Inhalt: This book provides a detailed overview of current or recent research exploring a wide range of ideas, theories, and practices around written text production. European researchers from a broad range of disciplines brought together under the European Research Network on Learning to Write Effectively were instructed to contribute short papers summarising their current activity. The papers are grouped around the four main themes. The first deals with issues around the development of basic (\'low-level\') writing skills, mainly in the early years of education. The second section focuses directly on issues around the teaching and learning of writing. This is divided into five parts that describe: evaluations of different forms of writing instruction, research exploring the processes by which writers learn, methods of text assessment in educational contexts, research exploring the effects of various learner and teacher variables on the development of writing skill, and conceptions of and variation in educational text genres. The third section reports research exploring effective document design. The final section has a main focus on tools for exploring the writing process
