"In seinen Tagen erstrahlte das goldene Zeitalter!" Mit diesen Worten beschrieb der Chronist Thietmar von Merseburg (gest. 1018) aus der Rückschau die Zeit Ottos des Großen. Tatsächlich erlebte Europa im 10. Jh. einen kulturellen Aufschwung von beispiellosem Ausmaß. Dieser Aufschwung spiegelt sich in der Magdeburger Ausstellung 'Otto der Große, Magdeburg und Europa' in hochrangigen Werken der Kunst und Kultur, aber auch in nicht minder wichtigen Zeugnissen des Alltagslebens wider. - Kein anderer Ort bietet sich für eine Ausstellung über diesen bedeutenden Herrscher des Mittelalters besser an als Magdeburg. Hier gründete Otto der Große ein Erzbistum und hier, in seinem prachtvoll ausgestatteten Dom, wurde er nach seinem Tode im Jahre 973 bestattet. - 400 kostbare Leihgaben aus aller Welt zeichnen ein umfassendes Bild der frühen Ottonenzeit, in dem die Grundlage der heutigen europäischen Staatenwelt gelegt wurde. Die Faszination der mittelalterlichen Originalwerke wird durch die überwiegend farbig abgebildeten Exponate im Katalog aufgenommen und ausführlich gewürdigt. Im reich illustrierten Essayband mit fast 40 Beiträgen renommierter Fachgelehrter aus dem In- und Ausland werden Themen der Ausstellung ergänzt und vertiefend dargestellt.
