Es handelt sich um eine erweiterte Neuausgabe der 1990 erschienenen Auswahl aus den Märchen aus 1001 Nacht, für die der Thienemann Verlag die von 1913 bis 1959 immer wieder aufgelegten Illustrationen von Mühlmeister aus dem Archiv hervorgeholt hatte. Sie enthält neben den umfangreichen 7 Reisen Sindbads, des Seefahrers, und den bekannten Geschichten von Aladin und Ali Baba u.a. auch Teile der "Abenteuer des Kalifen Harun al-Raschid", die das Charakteristikum dieser Märchensammlung, nämlich Geschichten innerhalb der Geschichten zu erzählen, verdeutlichen. Die Rahmenerzählung über König Scheherban und Scheherazade, die durch das Erzählen von Geschichten ihr Leben rettet, wird nur im Vorwort erwähnt. Grundlage der Texte ist die alte Übersetzung von Gustav Weil, die von Karl Heinz Berger und Regina Hegner in eine zeitgemäße Sprache gebracht wurde, wobei die Weitschweifigkeit der orientalischen Erzählweise beibehalten wurde. Als Ersatzanschaffung nach H. Künnenmanns Nacherzählungen bei Lappan, vor der Ueberreuter-Ausgabe empfohlen.
